SPINDLE WINS AS A GOOD THING. W. Shields Wins Out a New Purchase — Eagle Bird in Exciting Finish with Plainness. Buffalo. N. Y.. July 5. — The layers had anything but a profitable sessiou at Fort Erie this afternoon. Spindle, winner of the sixth race at mills of 5 to 1, was the medium of a killing made by Ma new owner. Willie Shields, and his friends. They obtained liberal odds about the colt because Shields rode one of his own jockeys. Sloorefaouae. Moorebonse is an unfashionable rider and the books took liberties with the eatt. Moorebonse made no mistake, however. After getting away with the leaders he rushed Spindle into a long lead on the backstn tch and never stopped riding. At the finish he led Colonel Jot by six lengths. The best finish of the afternoon came with the running of the second race, which went to Eagle Bin! after tin heavilv backed Ilauutcss had stolen a long lead. Caldwell, on Eagle Bird, sat perfectly still until well inside the furlong post. N earing the judges stand he suddenly got busy and Eagle Bird responded with a rush that allowed her to beat the tiring Ilauutcss a nose on the post. Solid Comfort carried S. Wilson to victory in the opening dash. Wilson is a stable boy and previous to today had never ridden a winner. What Wilson hicked in experience Solid Comfort made up in speed. She broke none too well, but moved up on the outside with a rush. Bounding the far turn Wilson was unable to keep her straight and she was running all over the track. In the homestretch she closed a big gap and. easily disponing of the opposition, drew away into a four-lengths fend. Lady [rasa showed dazzling s; oed in her race. She had the rail position and when the break came tlie field left the barrier aligned. Jockey Henry had to let Lady Irma race right along to retain her position, and after racing head and head with Sel-wik. Fountain Square and Al Muller to the half-mile past she drew clear. The first quarter was run in 2.! and the half mile in 48f . At the finish Lady Irma won easily from Fountain Square. Al Midler tiring badly in the stretch, as did Selwik. When jockeys J. Deavonport and J. Henry came off the road this morning iioth lads collapsed from excessive reducing. They recovered before the races and fulfilled their engagements. Henry riding two winners — Lady Irma and Donald Macdonald — both of which can led the colors of S. A. Clopton. W. A. Burttschell and Bam Louis have donated the ftaailon stallion. Kid. to he National Bureau of Breeding. The first stallion that the bureau received fmm a Itorseman was Our Boy, the gift of Mr. Burttschell. so todays donation is the second made by the turfman from Texas. J. o. Keene win leave for the Empire City track wilh .1. N. Camdens string on Saturday. Tin- judges had Q. II. Marl man, owner of class Leader, in the stand tins afternoon for an explanation of that horses race yesterday. Mailman was unable to explain the horses poor race and Class Leaders future form will be watched.
