WINNERS OF THE CALCUTTA SWEEP. London. Eng., July 15. — The "luckiest man in England" this year is Capt. T. 11. Kaban. wlio drew the winner. Leathers;, in the Calcutta Sweep on the Derby. On an investment of less than he won 00,090. If he had kept his nerve his winning would have amounted to 50,000 on his original — tbe greatest in the history of turf betting. But when he learned thai, he had drawn Lemberg he sold a portion of his ticket for 7,909. The fortunate officer is now in England on a years leave. No. 93,3g| was his winning ticket. He is ■n assistant military accountant of the first class in the Indian army accounts department. He bought two other tickets for members of his family. He is a member of the Isthmian Club. The Calcutta Sweep is the largest racing pool of the kind in the world, almost hall a million tickets being sold in all parts of India and the east, as well as in England. The tickets, which cost ten rupees, or about fourteen shillings, each, are keenly competed for and syndicates buy up large numbers and BBbpOQl the result. Even to draw a starter in the race means a large cash prize, and the second and third horses draw amounts in proportion to the first prize. The history of the Sweep litis many romances. One year the first prize of 50,000 was won by the six-year-old daughter of a signal man on an Indian railroad. In another year the prize fell to the lot of an officer who had just lost his all through the speculations of his son. The Derby Sweep last year was won by a valet in the West find Club in London, who sold half his ticket for 0,000, bought a large farm on the proceeds, and retired.
