* + I RACE HORSES THAT HAVE PROVED PAYING INVESTMENTS 4. , 4. Notwithstanding the great falling off in stake values that has marked American racing of the past few years, the possession of a good race horse continues an excellent busiuess proposition. While the opportunities for rolling up the enormous winnings that rewarded the owners of successful horses in the period of years ending with 1007 have been curtailed, there still remain many stakes that are well worth striving for and the winning of a single one of which would more than recompense an owner for the expense and care of training and racing a horse. Not all horses are stake winners, however, and it does not necessarily follow that because a horse is incapable of winning stakes that he cannot be made a profitable business investment. The subjoined list o; horses — all now live-year-olds and still in active service — contains the names of many that are only soiling platers, yet all have already won for their owners amounts in excess of ,000, and some of them an aggregate far in excess of tiiat amount. S. C. Hildreth a handicap horse. King James, makes the most impressive showing of any of the horses embraced in the list. This good son of Plaudit — Cnsightly has already won enough to ensure him a place among the great winners of the American turf, his total to date being the handsome sum of 01. 800. And lie is still seemingly good for several seasons of service as a racer. Among other notable winners in tin-list are Ed Alveys Iinkola. 7,710; Mr. Hildreths Firestone and Restigouche. 7,235 and 0,070. respectively; F. A. Foi-sythes Durante. 0,328. and William Walkers Stanley Fay, $.14,705. All of these Borers, together with others that are enumerated below, already have earned manv times their original cost, plus the amount expended for their development and keep, and are likely to still further increase the sum total of their winnings before their usefulness on the race course ceases.
