JOHN MADDEN AS A HORSE TRADER. The purchase of S. . llildrcths three-year-old Dalmatian by Louis Winans of London lor 0.010, or perhaps more, throw* more light upon the important insure cut by John K. Madden in the making of horse trades. Mr. Winans. an American, Itorn la Baltimore, is a wealthy sportsman who became idem i tied with the trotters years ago and iucidcut-;,li purchased Siliko from Madden tor 880,600. Be-coiiiing interested in the runners in Kngland. where be has lived for some time, Mr. Winans two years ago purchased Sir Martin and Edward from Madden, and aceording to the latter, he paid 5,000 and !f.ViMN respective ly lot these colts. Sir Martin was a ciaek lvvo-vear old Ml t|Ua country before be Bailed for tin; other side. Where he was made favorite tor the Derby won by the late King Ldwards Minora. Sir Martin fell, it will be recalled, when running in a prominent position in thai event. But in other British turf fixtures Sir Martin proved his quality, so that when he broke down recently, as currently reported by cahle. Mr. Winans turned to Madden ittli for another Rood horse. ■addons dose relations on the American turf with fJUdretb Lave been a subject tor much comment and for that reason it is assumed that the fanner .sounded the praises of Dalmatian to the owner of Sir Martin, with the restill that the Etbcl-bert three -year old was bought lor a princely sum and will iace on the English tracks next year. Madden therefore lias done Hildivlh a good turn, which is not at all strange in view of the way Hildreth has been buying Madden horses. While many turfmen have persistently argued that Madden only based the running qualities of these thoroughbred* to Hildreth. both parties to the transactions have stated that the sales were botiH tide. They have denied the report that the ownership of Fitz Herbert was juggled last spring when that famous horse i was reported sold t,. Madden by Hildreth for 0,000 and within two months was banded back to Hildreth for K.0U0. • .... Madden has frequently stated with emphasis that be nctuagv aatd King James. Joe Madden. Fayette. Dandelion. Hampton Court and Novelty to Hildreth outright ami that be did not retain an interest in any of them. Taking Madden at his word, therefore, it must be admitted that be received the short end of some of these transactions, as King James. Joe Madden and Novelty have won stakes and purses many times in excess of their purchase prices. Two years ago King .lames and Joe Madden were turned over to Hildreth for 2,000 and $]o.ooo respect ively. it was said. Last year alone King James earned *:ts.2" :;. while Joe Maddens winnings amounted to JU-L.mi.i. This year King James has earned 1,430 more, but Joe Madden Ims done nothing. In the case of Novell v. Madden sold him early last spring for 1910.sh.ooo to Hildreth. in whose interests the Kingston colt has won 1,370 so far and has a sterling chance to capture more than 5,000 in the Futurity. Figuring up therefore it appeals that Hildreth in return tor a tribe more than 5,000 paid to Madden for King James. Joe Madden and Novelty litis cleaned up 35,000 in round numbers, which would seem to indicate that Madden was a Iritle hasty in parting with these thoroughbreds. Hildreth did not obtain Dalmatian from Madden, however. He bought him for 00 as a yearling when Pern Belmont pal the coll on the market, and since the beginning of Dalmatian! racing career Hildreth has earned 4,500, of which ,305 was gathered last vear. tracked by Maddens recommendation, therefore. Hildreth has been enabled to sell Dalmatian for big money and incidentally swell his bank account for the year. it is worthy of note that while Hiblreths horses have won more than jllKi.iHMi lor him this year on the New York tracks. Madden ill his own colors has won less than 83,000, his horses winning four races, eleven seconds and nine thirds. Km Madden has had the satisfaction of seeing the two-year-olds. Nauslion. Onager, Amalfl and Others sold by him as vcarlings to It. T. Wilson. Jr.. win good races. Madden received 0,000 lor a hatch of yearlings including those youngsters and $:: l.HMi mute for another lot a lew weeks ago. so that it cannot he said that the turf here no longer lias at tractions for him. -New Y ork Sun.
