FITZ HERBERT IN RACING CONDITION. Saratoga, N. Y., Septesaber 7. - In denying tin report that Fits Herbert had gone wrong and would he retired to the stud S. C. Hildreth said: "This report Is not the tirst that has had Fitz Herbert in the discard. I cannot understand where such stories originate. But for the benefit of Unpersons who have started them 1 will say that Fitz Herbert is as sound todav as he was the day he was foaled. And if anvone still has a notion that he is not all right I will match my Ethelheit four-year-old against anv horse in America, one mile and a quarter, weight for age. at ten, twenty or Iffy thousand dollars a side. I cant sav say more than that, except that I |H-Iieve Fitz Herbert to be good enough to beat any horse in the world." Pita Herbert has not started since his victory over olambala in the Brooklyn Handicap, ill which he conceded fourteen pounds to Richard T. Wilsons great four-year-old, becauM be caught a cold shortly ■fter the running of the Brooklyn and was laid up too long to be prepared for tin- Suburban. But he recovered bis health ami his form in Julv and worked a mile and a quarter in 2:0* at Yonkers in preparation for the 810,000 Dominion Handicap at Port Erie, the running of which was indetltiitely poBtponed because of a railroad strike. Pita Herbert was ready to run here on the opening day of the Saratoga meeting in the Saj-atoga Handicap. But if lie had started he would have had to carry 133 pounds, and Mr. Hildreth did not care to give him a gallop of one mile am! a quarter under such weight In muddy going against such a fi rmidable mud runner as Olambala. A ■reck or so after the Saratoga Handicap Fitz Herbert cuffed himself iii work at the Springs and pulled up a bit sore, but he walked out of bis soreness almost immediately. He is in the Earl Gre* Handicap, a race of one mile and a quarter, to he run at Montreal September M, and he will probably start. Also be is iu the deferred Dominion Handicap and Mr. Hildreth will do his best to get him to tin- post in winning form.
