LA MONTAGNE HORSES IN FRANCE Baltimore Md October 19 Harry La Montague one of the patrons of the Pimlico meeting is de ¬ lighted with reports that have come to Win froin young Preston Bnrcu of the doings of his horses in France Mr La Montague sent Martinez Gauntlet Fred Kecne Scarpia and Merry Knight to France under Mr Burchs charge in September They wore In excellent condition when they landed but Mr La Montague naturally expected that the sea voyage would knock them cut and he did not expect to hear that they will figure prominently in races before next year But the unexpected happened The horses reached France in such condition that th J youthful trainer saw no reason for waiting until next year to race so he put Gauntlet and Fre Ketiie to work immediately Both these twoyear olds have since finished third Iu sprint races and Mr Bnrch writes that one of them will win before the season closes Every horse of the La Montague string trained by Mr Burch will later on be trained for steeplechasing a feature of racing which appeals strongly to their owner
