STATISTICS OF THE CANADIAN TURF TURFReview Review of Financial and Other Phases of Racing in the Dominion During the theSeason Season Just Ended The first season of racing In Canada under the operation of the Miller law recently came to a close and a review of the results is Interesting by comparison with former years when no such restrictions were In force as now are As an inevitable outcome of the restricted meetings provided for by the Miller law the distribution of money ambus the successful owners In stakes and purses fell far below the total of the lireceding year which had marked the high tide of racing prosperity in the Dominion It was likewise materially less than in the years immediately preceding the banner showing of 1909 The increased oppor ¬ tunities that horsemen were afforded by the opening of minor tracks in the easteni part of the Dominion did not anywhere near compensate for the big falling off In purse offerings in British Columbia alone The Victoria and Vancouver tracks raced for only 34 days this year as against 104 in 1909 1909It It Is on the tracks within the jurisdiction of the Canadian Racing Associations Toronto Hamilton Fort Erie Windsor and Montreal that the difference in distribution between 1909 and 1910 was most marked however These tracks raced 120 days during 1909 Their racing schedule during the season just ended covered only 70 days As against a distribution of 488067 In 1909 und 439540 in 1908 their dis ¬ tribution this year amounted to 341088 341088The The arrangement l y which almost as much time as was devoted to the racing itself elapsed between each meeting at the important tracks was far from satisfactory to owners and others included In that class of turfmen designated as regulars The enforced Idleness at frequent intervals that such an inter ¬ mittent schedule entailed was looked upon as a distinct drawback and those who contemplate continuing ihfir futureIn patronage of the circuit will welcome a more compact arrangement of dates in future In all other respects the season was eminently satisfactory The sport that was provided on the Canadian Racing Associations tracks was brilliant and of high class despite the curtailment of the racing schedules Especially was this true of the latter part of the season when the Canadian tracks benefited materially from the suspension of racing on the metropolitan courses of New York It is asserted that the financial results to the various associations came up to expectations That the Canadian tnrf emerged from the agitation leading up to the enactment of the Miller law in an enviable manner and that It is IMIW on an enduring basis is the firm belief of those who are best qualified to Judge Under the protection cf yuch a law as the Canadian racing associations now enjoy It is reasonable to suppose that they will con ¬ tinue to flourish and that the tnrf in the Dominion will go on to even greater things than have been achieved in the past The following tabulation recapitulates in a general way the results of the season of i 10 on the various tracks of Canada = W = = Track and Meeting Woodbine Toronto first meeting 50518
