ASTONISHING FBICES FOB YEABLINGS Public Sales Last September Show Remarkable Pros ¬ perity of Racing in Argentina In Argentine racing and its adjuncts are in a re ¬ markably prosperous state of development This is emphasized by the prices paid for yearlings from the leading breeding establishments of that country at the annual September sales The majority of the I studs in the Argentine are not rim on the lines of English establishments Stallions of the caliber of I Diamond Jubilee Tardy Cyllene and Polar Star are I not available to mares other than those belonging to the owners of the horses This is known as the I lockup policy It accounts in a very large meas ¬ ure for tlie colossal prices made by the offspring of I such sires The proprietor of a racing stud who I wanjs yearlings by the bestclass stallions is com ¬ pelled to buy at auction It follows of course that by excluding mares belonging to other owners these Argentine breeders sacrifice many thousands of pounds a year which they might obtain in the shape of service fees and the yield obtained by the sale of their yearlings must consequently be discounted to that extent Even so howeveK the returns are remarkable and afford all the proof that Is required of countryThe the prosperity of the country The first four studs to offer their yearlings at Buenos Ayres last month were in the Haras Marie Lulsa whose chief stallion is Clermont a son of St Simon Cabana Reyles where Ercildoune is located the Haras Oriental where Galloway by Martagon stands and the Haras Las Ortigas the home of Diamond Jubilee The highest price given for a Clermont colt was S5250 and it also hap ¬ pened to be the figure for the son of Galloway which made most money a colt named Oriental out of a Minting mare the buyer being Senor Livingston tho owner of Larrea The consignment from the Cabana Ueyles comprised five colts and seven fillies all with one exception by Flotsam This sire a son of St Frusquin and Float lias been much to the fore lately in South America His threeyearold son Pilgrim which finished third to Larrea in the Polla de Potrillos is undoubtedly one of the best colts of his year and a capital advertisement for his sire Yet for some reason the yearlings by Flot ¬ sam now offered did not sell so well as those offered a year ago One of the colts however made 4800 This was Britomarte out of the Enthusiast mare Ailsa Crag A sister to Fabiola winner of the Argentine One Thousand Guineas last season named Anarqnia fetched 4375 and Brulote a colt out of imported Fresh Air by St Angelo out of Queen of the Air by Petrarch made 3250 3250When When Senor I nacio Correas gave 150000 for Dia ¬ mond Jubilee four or five years ago there was a tendency towards the belief that the brother to Persimmon arid Florlzel II had been very well sold Perhaps he had but it is quite certain now that he was also well bought When the first crop of Dia ¬ mond Jubilees Argentinebred yearlings were sold last season Senor Correas practically recovered the whole1 of his outlay on the son of St Simon and Per dita II he is now many thousands to the good Last month twentyfour colts and fillies by Diamond Jubilee sold for 121500 There were twelve colts and they made the magnificent average of 7650 The twelve fillies on the other hand averaged only 3500 Seven of the colts and ttiree of the fillies made four figures are debarred from a number of races in the Argentine and are conse ¬ quently placed at a disadvantage with the yearlings bred in Argentina
