OCEAN BOUND FINALLY WINS WOODFORD CLAYS GOOD FILLY SCORES IN THE CRITERION STAKES Rain Falls at Latonia but Track Remains in Good GoodCondition Condition Unfavorable Weather Affects Patronage I Cincinnati O November 10 Cool threatening weather prevailed again this afternoon at Latonia detracted from the enjoyment of the sitort ami re ¬ duced the attendance During the early hours of the day showers caused the track to liecoine slow but constant work over it with the harrows put it in fairly good shape by post time Under favorable conditions this would have ranked with the best days at the course as the sterling card gave promis of splendid sport The offering was topped off by the Criterion Stakes at threequarters which en ¬ gaged six of the best racers at the track including Jack Atkin Ocean Bound Chcrryoia Mary Davis and Prince Gal GalThe The mile and a sixteenth handicap served as a good secondary feature and had among its starters some horses of good class Both these events were wqu by the favorites Ocean Bound accounting for the stake and Fauntleroy for the handicap Both scored their initial success of the season on Keii tncky tracks Ocean Bound had been a frequent contender in races but Fauntleroy had only been seep once before under colors in these parts Jack Atkin showing his customary speed went out to force a fast pace but after going half a mile be ¬ gan boring out and was lucky to last for third place Milton B was troublesome from the outset and only succumbed to Ocean Bound in the last stride Prince Gal sulked nearly the entire trip and Chcrryoia found the distance a trifle short shortR R F Carman lost a pair of purses this afternoon because of poor riding His recent casteni iniK rta tion Gross was responsible for the failure of Naughty Lad in the opener and Question Mark in the erasing dash In both instances Gross showed him ¬ self weak when it came to the finish Goose and J Deavcnport outriding him Goose was on Gold Oak and Deaveuport on Chas F Grainger Mr Carman also started Aldte and Whlta Wool The first named was an overwhelming favorite and made a wretched showing Whatever chance White Wool inigiit have had went glimmering on the first turn where there was a jam that forced him out of con ¬ tention It also accounted for Adams Express bad showing Tliis colt was thrown against the fence and his rider Kcogb had his ankle and toes badly injured necessitating the cancellation of his re ¬ maining engagements The winner of the race turned up in Du Bois which had been free from in ¬ terference throughout Single File another long priced one landed second place and Husky Lad which to many had appeared the one responsible for all the crowding brought up In third place The judges could not fix the blame for the crowding crowdingFavorites Favorites scored in four of todays races bnt the big players sustained heavy losses as most of their selections went down to defeat defeatAdditional Additional eastern arrivals today included Howard Lewis trainer for J E Widener and H C Hallcn l eck The latter had a good wager on his colt Fanntleroy winner of the handicap handicapW W E Suggs claimed Rclluf out of the closing race yesterday yesterdayJoe Joe Morris will probably be added to the list ot entries for the twomile race On his recent show ing formidablyFletcher he does not loom very formidably Fletcher Campbell passed through here with four horses on his way from Findlay O to Pensacola Fla Lon Johnson is trying to purchase Fred Essen from Barney Schreibcr SchreibcrBoth Both combinations today were won by the field backers Had anyone selected the winner of either combination it would have netted the lucky on a handsome return
