MOJCRIEF COUPS ARE UPSET JUDGES CHANGE RIDERS ON GEORGE S. DAVIS AT THE LAST MOMENT. Horse That Rumor Had It Was Being -Reserved for Killing: Runs Excellent Race Ruling: Against Jockey and Trainer Follows. Jacksonville, Fla., March 3. The , judges had a busy session at Moncrief Park this afternoon and iliey upset what were supposed to bo a couple of well planned coups. In the third race there were rumors that the horse George K. Davis had not been doing his best in his recent races and that his people were saving him for a "killing" which was to be pulled off next week. Gullett, who has ridden the horse in all of his races here this winter, was carded as the rider, but he was taken down and I.oftus substituted. When the change in riders was announced there was a rush to get bets on George S. Davis, and the horse was backed from 50 down to 15 to 1. George S. Davis was in with a good lot of racers, including Kings Daughter and Donau, but the way bis backers wagered showed that they ihought fhey had a good thing. The horse dashed to the front when the break came and showed the way until well into the homestretch, where Kings Daughter moved up and, taking the lead at the furlong post, drew away to win with ease. After the race a ruling by the judges Indefinitely suspended jockey Gullett and ordered that no further entries be accepted of horses under the care or superintendency of W. V. Conran. The officials also had owner U. G. Martin and trainer Frank Geriug on the carpet after the last race. Mr. Martin owns First Peep and Mr. Goring is carded as the trainer. The mare was warmed up with a battery, which was given to the exercise hoy, it is said, by an outsider. The matter has been taken under investigation. Two. of todays races were consolation affairs, the conditions calling for starters owned by horsemen that had not won a race during the meeting. Howie t won one of the races and J. U. Robinson the other. Among the visitors at the course this afternoon was II: R. Knapp, one of the stewards of the-Jockey Club, who was the guest of the judges luring the afternoon. Mr. Knapp left for St. Augustine tonight to spend a week, lie will stop off tor a few days in Jacksonville on his return north. A party of prominent Kentucky horsemen arrived this morning, including George A. Rain, the well-known auctioneer who will conduct the sale of the Pons and Cliinn horses tomorrow; Cateshy Wodford, Garret D. Wilson and .1. II. lteed. Harry " J. Lynch of Xew York was also an arrival. Sam Louis presented jockey Ityrne with a split second gold watch for winning, with Monty Fox yesterday. Judge Joseph A. Murphy has announced that he will not be connected with King Edward Park or. Deloriinier Park at Montreal in any otlicial capacity the coming summer. Mr. Murphy hail a lucrative offer from these tracks to preside. The fact that thev were half-mile tracks did not weigh with him. as iie believes that the cleanliness of racing does not depend upon the size of the oval over which horses race, but he is a believer in organization and Insisted that the plants should receive sanction from tin; Canadian Racing Associations before be closed with them. This has not been done and the matter is closed for the present at least. Last summer Judge ."Murphy was offered the position at Dufferin Park. Toronto, and declined for the same reason, and he sees no reason to change his policy at this lime. Jockev MeCahey has gone to Ins home in the north and will not again be seen in the saddle until the Jamestown meeting opens, when he will ride under the management of W. Midgely.
