TORONTO MEETING AT END 6P0RT OF STIRRING SORT PROVIDED FOR PATRONS OF WOODBINE ON CLOSING DAY. Plate Glass Makes It Interesting for Zeus in King Edward Hotel Gold Cup Contest, a Two Horse Affair— St. Bass Takes Another Stake. Toronto. tint.. May 27. — Keen sport featured the closing lay of the spring mrrtiBE at Woodbine. The Ontario Jockey tluli provided a splendid pro RM for the eccssMa, with the Kins Edward Hotel GoM up. the Niinrod Welter Plate, the William llcudric Memorial Handicap and the Street Railway Steeplechase over the full course as the special attractions. Cloee finishes marked a majority of the races and much enthusiasm was displayed during the afternoon. Kor a time it looked as if the Kins Ldward Hotel Gold Cup would develop into a walk •ver for the Ilildreth stable, which had Fitz Herbert, King .lames and Zens to depend upon. Thomas Ilcahy. trainer for II. T. Wilson, scratched 04am-bala and Nanslioii. and then added Owanux. onlv to withdraw the latter at the last minute. The I. S. I. Randolph stalde trainer finally decided to send Plate Hass to compete with Zeus in an effort to win the rich prime. And what promised to lie a onesided affair proved a stirring contest. Zeus was ridden by . H. Shilling, while Guy Garner had the mount on Mate Glass. When the barrier was sprang Plate Glass left the post with a Rood hurst of speed and, taking a lead of live lengths in the run through the homes! retch, he set a dazzling pace and had Shilling on Zeus hustling before they had gone a quarter to keep up. The first quarter was run in ZH and the half in 47. Both were running freely and as they passed the half mile post, the watches showed that they had gone the list three -quarters in 1:11*. which was faster than the track record lor that distance. At this stage Shilling drew his whip and struck Zeus once or twice, but the three-year old was ■■able to gain an inch, ami it began to look as if the added starter would make a run away affair of tlie race. As they entered the homestretch both were doing their liest. but Plate Glass still had a lengths advantage. The mile was covered in 1:38, which was also luster than the track record. In the final furlong Shilling made an extra effort and Zeus responded with splendid courage. while Plate Glass began to weaken. In the Una I sixteenth the three-year-old succeeded in getting his head in front and. gradually gaining trom there home, he led Plate Glass by a neck as the winning mark was passed. The mile and a anal III was inn in 2:nijt. representing a new track record for the distance. Considering that Zeus carried 113 pounds as compared with 117 on Plate Glass, the perforin ante of the Ilildreth colt was really remarkable. The William Hendrie Memorial Handicap is a stake of recent institution. Its brief history is as fellows: Tear. Winner. A.Wt Jockey. Val. Time.
