f •*• DECISION OF THE FAMED EPSOM DERBY RIGHT AT HAND .f. 4. The Lpsom Derby will be run next Wednesday. No other race has such world-wide celebrity. By historical associations and common consent it is the race of all races and to win it means enduring fame for horse and owner. From the king down every Lnglish owner cherishes the hope that some day it may fail to his lot to experience the supreme joy of leading home a Derby winner in exulting pride. It is not probable that King George will have a starter this year, but it will not lie many years until he will furnish contenders and possibly a winner. A I least such is the wish of every loyal Briton. When Bnnstar won the Two Thousand Guineas in easy fashion a few weeks back be was at once made the Derby favorite, but with some objections and misgivings., based mainly on the suggestion that he is a Siuolridge and therefore probably a non Stayer. However, he CSKSe out in the mile anil a quarter Newmarket Stakes at the Newmarket Second Spring meeting and defeated I.eaurepaire and other candidates just as easily as he had triumphed in the Two Thousand. This hugely dissipated the fear that a mile and a half would prove too tar for him to cover successfully and he is now the hottest ante post favorite of recent years, standing at 0 to 4 in the latest quotations received. Still Bnnstar is to have abundant opposition when the big race conies on. English turf publications give the daily training moves of thirty-one probable opponents lor Jo. Is fast colt, of these King William was second choice at 100 to 11 in the most recent ante-post betting. Stedfast. Pietri and Lord Burgoyue stood at lo to 1 each. Adam Bede at 100 to S and others at longer prices. Lord Bar guy ae won the Preach Two Thousand two weeks ago and there is now considerable expectation, but no certainly, that M. Bdmond Plane will send him over from France in another effort to lean Derby honors. Undoubtedly be would come in for sound backing if it was known positively he is to lie sent to Bnsjoas. So far as American candidates are concerned it cannot be s.ihl that there is much encouragement for folks on this side of the big water. Adam Bede is a gigantic colt that has trained encoiiragiiigly and has hem well backed, lieing supported to win over 5,000 afaj 1!» alone. He is to be ridden by P.. Dillon anil is all that could be desired in breeding, con format ion and action, but lie is an unknown quantity in public racing and English critics hold to the opinion that he has been in their country such a short lime that he cannot be properly prepared for such a race as the Derby. Mr. James R. Keenes Runnymcilc ran a good race in the Two Thousand Guineas and finished fifth when not entirely ripe. Since then he has won the Marlborough Stakes at Gatwlck over a slightly longer coarse than die Rowley Mile and is probably much Unproved. These two colts represent out best chances. It is said that Mr. Whitney will be represented by All Gold. It is nit sure that he will not start Iron Mask also, although the latter ran more like a sprinter than a stayer in the Two Thousand. The Canadian hope. Kel dOr, is supposed to be a sure .starter, but Outside of the fact thai he has been steadily in training nothing is known of what he can do. Below arc the names, owners and breeding of the thirty two deemed most likely lo start. Some of them will be absentees and others not named here may be sent to the post. However that may be. it seems more than probable that Suiistar will win the big race. His speed is immense and he is a horse of the highest type In appearance. Keid Walkers eh. c.
