SUNSTAR FIRST IN THE EPSOM DERBY. Joels Colt Defeats Twenty-Five Opponents in a Canter — Royal Family in Attendance. London. Bug., May 31. — Twenty-six horses started in tlie Lpsoin Derby today and J. R. Joels Sun-star, ridden by the French jockey Stern, won as easily as he triumphed in the Two Thousand Guineas April 20. As on that occasion. Lord Derbys Sled-fast was again second to Sunstar and Capt. F. Foresters Royal Tender finished third. Four American-owned eligible*, .1. R. Keenes Runnyniedc. II. P. Whitneys Iron Mask and All Gold, and I.. Wiuans Adam Rede finished in the unplaced division, as also did two French candidates. Stern waited with Sun-star to Tatteidiani Corner, then brought him through next to the rails and won witli all ease by two lengths. Stedfast finishing four in front of Royal Tender. Sunstar was the favorite at 13 to 8. Stedfast dosing at s to 1 and Royal Tender at 25 to 1. Mr. Fairies colt Phryxus finished fourth. King George and Quei n Mary witnessed the race and the certainty of their attendance led to the usual enormous crowd being increased to record breaking numbers. King George personally congratulated Mr. Joel and Jockey Stern after the race and was wildly cheered as he did so. Tin- Catcrham Plate of noo sovereigns for two-year-olds at five furlongs, was ansa by J. Buchanans chestnut colt Jingling Georgie. with Lord Baae-beiys bay colt Clod lUS second and J. K. Whlcners American-bred brown colt kg Adam — Martha Gorman, third.
