EPSOM OAKS WON BY A RANK OUTSIDER. London. F.ng.. June 2. — The Oaks was run at 1psoni today with twenty-one starters and resulted in tne success of an outsider. W. Brodrick Cloctes hay filly. Cherimoya, by Cherry Trot — Svelte, at 25 to 1 in the betting, winning, with Lord Derbys Hair Trigger II., by Fowling picci — Altcar. second, and Cast. F. Foresters brown filly. Tootles, by John otiannt — Lady Drake, third. Tootles was at 7 to 2 in the betting and Hair Trigger 11. al ■ to 1. The oaks is run over the Derby course and is of the value of 5.000 sovereigns. The Acorn Stak s of 1.000 sovereigns, for two-year-old fillies, at five furlongs, was won by Charles Car rolls chestnut filly. Melody, by Meddler— Ballan-trae. Lord Boaeherya hay filly. Charmian. by Cicero Basal bo. finishing second, and Maj. Fustace Loders bay filly by Spearmint — Adula. third. Eleven fillies ran. Cherimoya was not raced last year and made her first start in the Oaks. Ilcr sire. Cherry Tree, was importi d to this country when a foal by Marcus Daly ami named Matt Byrnes by him. After Mr. Dalys death Matt Byrnes was bought on Fnglish account and. after being taken back to Kngland. had his name changed to Cherry Tree. There he has been a fairly successful sire, hut Cherimoya is his first classic winner. Melody is a sist"r to the fast filly. Mediant, which created such a stir in England two years ago. The Aran Stakes were worth ,050 to the winner last year and probably as valuable this year.
