FAVORITES FAKE POORLY SECOND AND THIRD CHOICES SUCCESSFUL IN CHURCHILL DOWNS RACES. Taboo Follows Up Series of Selling Race Successes by a Handicap Victory — The Hague Again a Winner for W. G. Yanke. Louisville. Ky.. June 2. — The followers of favorites had a disastrous experience this afternoon at Churchill iKiwns. while backers of .second and third choices fared well, all the purses with one exception going to contenders of that sort. The large number of Rtartera played a figure in the failure of the hest-backed ones, for all the defeated choices were either forced to go wide or met with interference sufficient to cost them success. Max HIraeha consistent Taboo continued in her winning streak and incidentally graduated from the selling plater ranks by a smart victory in the tum-iii ap which featured todays offering and in which she beat some gi«od racers. Carlton G., on the Strength of his last good race, was considered best, but sharp support developed for Bourlxm Beau, mainly on account of the change of riders from J. Mi Inlyre to Goose. The former handled him in liis last start so bunglingly that he liuislnd unplaced. Goose today kept hiin in forward contention throughout and the horse gave Taboo a strenuous time to win. He would have taken the purse but for being forced to go wide into the stretch. Taboo, by running close to the inner rail, saved enough ground |i give her the victory. Carlton G. weakened near the end and had to In- hard ridden to save third place. it ..is the fourth successive victory for Taboo at this meeting. It. J. Mackenzies Flfln Beau took the opening dash in a hard drive of four — Melvor. Royal Captive and Delaney — all being separated by noses. The : i lite. Pocky OBrien, showed himself to be a rank nonstayer. for he weakened badly in the final stxteentth, when his chances appeared best. The two-year olds in the second race brought on a good deal of crowding in the scramble for positions soon after the start, and in the ruixup Igloo, owned hy F. R. Hitchcock and ridden by J. Glass, crossed her legs and fell heavily. Luckily no serious conse-qnences resulted. Terrible Dan. one of the choices, was especially a sufferer from the crowding and failed as a result to get any portion of the purse, tirst money being taken by Walter sVott, with Littlo Dutch in second place and Judge Sale tllfrd. Rose of Jeddah. the favorite, had no mishaps and seemingly is of little present account. W. G. Yinkcs The Hague scored her second suc-eesa of the meeting when she led a good band of platers to the finish in the third race. Imprudent brat The Pippin for second place. Light " at Life the second choice, got un in the last stride to lieat Ethel Samson in the tiftu race. Be. the favorite, had scant chance under the Incompetent handling that J. Mclntyre gave him. The closing purse went to King Solomon, which showed a much improved performance over former e sa.s and outstayed Golden Pearl in the final drive to win by a head. Melissa landing third. Jockey Kennedy, who had the mount on ilannis in this race. ma to blame for some rough riding, from which Wander suffered most. J. Wilson, who rode Wander, struck sharply at Kennedy with his whip to make him di dst for crowding, but was finallv forced to pull out of contention. The judges tined Kennedy 1911.sh0, but let Wilson go without punishment, as they considered his provocation sufficiently great. J. O. Keene was lined 0 by the executive committee this afternoon for engaging in fisticuffs yesterday with J. w. Parrish. Scenes provocation far striking Parrish was great and was a factor in the sniallncss of ihe line. Jockey Taplins followers received big returns for their investments in the niutuel combinations. Fllin Beau and Walter Scott, winners respectively of the first and second races, both ridden by Tapliii, paid 57.00. Oiseau and Light Wool were shipped today to the Canadian Breeding Bureau headquarters at Montreal and will be transferred later to Manitoba and Alberta. Milam has sold Labdd to .1. II. Weaver. Jockeys Gmild and Ganz wore suspended bv the starter for the rest of the meeting for disobedience at the post The patrol judge station has been transferred to the three furlongs post, enabling that official to ikv-cern more clearly who may be at fault for the frequent crowding on the lower turn.
