LATONIA GETS SOME RAIN TRACK CONDITIONS CHANGE IN MIDST OF AFTERNOONS RACING. Star Jasmine Easily Disposes of Opposition in Chief Offering: of Mediocre Card — Handzaretta Takes Race in Which Royal Captive Disappoints. Cincinnati. 0.. June 14. — A severe wind storm which came up simultani sly with the starting of the third race, caused a panicky feeling among the spectators at Latonia this afternoon and obscured the view of tlie running of the horses for a period after they had passed tlie half-mile ground. The air cleared when rain fell heavily just as tlie horses were finishing and for the remainder of the afternoon the wet weather continued. The last three races were inn over a muddy course and this circumstance caused the tardy withdrawals of Zienap and Summer Night from the closing dash, from which Iont had been scratched early in the day. Todays attendance was again of generous proportions. among the visitors being members of the New York. Brooklyn and Cincinnati base trail teams. Todays card was of mediocre quality and brought but tew of the stars into action. The si ort. hear-ever, was Interesting and the results pleasing to the majority of the spectators. The big operators were in rare form and managed to land on four of the altern. Kins winners, their principal disappointment coming with the running of tlie third race, in which Royal Captive failed to run up to expectatious. Aside from Royal Captives disappointing showing. the performance of Handzaretta was sensational. This moody racer was away last, being practically lett. but came with a rush in the last sixteenth to win in the last stride. Star Jasmine had little serious opposition in the fourth race. Dilatory and Koretop offering the greatest contention. II. K. Knapp sored his second suc-cesa of the meeting when Petronius took tlie closiug purse in handy style, with Tom Righee in second place. Dutch Rock was favored by the slipperv going that prevailed when tlie fifth race was called and lasted to beat Discontent, with Oracle, the favorite, far hack and floundering. afcOeary took a band of nsetiil youngsters into camp in the opener and Ben Lasca made a show of ids opponents iu the second. County Tax was shinned with Governor Gray to Hamilton. James S. Fverniau. who went with the horses, said they would both be returned here bv Monday next. Jockey A. Burton lias contracted to ride for Amos Turney and left for Hamilton today. J. S. Ward shipped a three-year-old maiden to the Canadian track to he handled by .Mr. Turney. Jockey Steele was another to leave for Hamilton during the day. Somas entry will in future be barred here on account of her bad actions at the barrier.
