TWO THOUSAND AND DERBY WINNERS. Only about one fifth of the total number of winners of the Two Thousand Guineas have succeeded in adding to their fame by victory in the Epsom Derby. To be exact, it may be as well to say here that there have been one hundred and two races lor the "Two Thousand, which was not inaugurated until ISO!, and only twenty-one of the 103 winners of that race — Moslem and Formosa ran a dead heat lor it in 1H0.S have also won the "Blue Riband. "Heroes of the double event of the Two Thousand and Derby include Smolensko. Cadland which won the run-off for the Derby after a dead heat with The Colonel. Bay Middleton. Cotherstone, West Australian. Macaroni. Gladiateur. Lord Lyon. Pretender, Shotover. Ormonde. Ayrshire, Common, Isin glass, l.adas. Salts* More, Flying For. Diamond Jubilee. Rock Sand. St. Amant and Minoru. At a first glance the proi ortion of twenty-one out of 103 appears to be very small, surprisingly so, but it must be borne in niiml that on numerous occasions the winner of the "Two Thousand has not run for the Dferby. From the inaugural race for the "Guineas in 1809 to 1910 inclusive it lias happened on numerous occasions that the Newmarket winner was either not engaged, or failed to meet his engagement in the great Epsom race. "Examination of "Ortons Annals shows that from the inaugural year of the Two Thousand to 1S43 fourteen of the thirty-five winners were not seen out in the Derby, of the remaining twenty-one only four won the Blue Riband, these being Smolensk.. Cadland alter a dead heat with The Colonel, Ray Middleton and Cotlwrstono. Four others were see-on. 1 at Epsom, including Wizard 1So9. Nectar. Reginald and Riddlesworth. while two others finished third in Ihrahini and Grey Momus. In later years another Wizard, distinguished by the prefix The. rather curiously likewise won the Two Thousand." and was beaten ;it Kpsoiu. filling the second place to Thormanby in 18t;0. "Ortons Annals takes us no further than 1 St.;. but reference to the "Calendar" shows that only nine of the Guineas winners from ISM to 1910 were noil stai tors it Epsom, the remaining sixty seven duly putting in an appeal aneo. and of these seventeen won. la all, therefore, eighty winners of the Two Thousand from the first to last have tried conclusions in the chief race of the year, with the result that twenty-one of t lit n i added Epsom laurels to their Newmarket crowns. Of the others thirteen in the aggregate were second for the Derby, ten were third and nine were fourth as far as can be traced. ""The percentage of winners oi the "Guineas that also won the Derby it will be seen from the above Is. roughly, one in four 21 out of so. The last thirty years, however, shows :i better percentage, for of the twent.v seven Newmarket winners from tfltl to 1*10 inclusive, that competed in the Derby — Scott Free. Knterprise and Vcdas were noil -runners — no fewer than twelve bronchi off the double, or something over forty-four per cent. The names of the dozen referred to are the last twelve in the list given at the coininenieinenl of these notes beginning with Sliotovcr."— London Sportsman,
