WILLIAM GARTHS YEARLINGS AT BENNING. Washington, D. C. December 13. William Garth will winter a big band of yearlings at the old Denning track of the Washington Jockey Club, and he believes he has a likely lot of coming two-year-olds. At any rate, nothing shown at the Kenning course has worked as swiftly as two of his Gloriiier colts and a son of Dermis and Estimate that lie recently iHUight from Anthony L. Aste. The fastest of the Gloritier colts is out of Glad Tidings she a daughter or Knight of the Thistle. This fellow has worked a quarter over the Columbia Course at Kenning In better than 24 seconds. He is a lusty, big-boned chestnut that Mr. Garth purchased from the Hancocks of Ellcrslie Farm In Virginia. Gloriiier, winner of the Carter and Metropolitan Handicaps of 1907 and the best Hastings that came to the races ahead of Fair Play, is now at the head of the Ellerslie Stud, he having taken the place of the deceased Fatherless. -The breeders of Virginia are greatly pleased with Gloriiier, whose book for the coming breeding season was filled some time ago. The Hancocks have Gloriiier under lease from James II. McCorniiek. who developed tho son of Hastings for Louis V. Kell. They have another promising young stock horse in Celt, son of Commando and Maid of Erin, under lease from James R. Keene. Celt won the Brooklyn Handicap and the Jockey Club Weight for Age Race of 190S under the spotted jacket of the vice-chairman of the Jockey Club, and be is rated by horsemen as second only to Colin among the great sons of Commando. Mr. Garth, who has many good producing mares at inglcside, says he will not maintain a stallion at his place as long as Gloriiier and Celt remain at Ellerslie. The Hermis colt in the Garth string at Benning, which has worked so well, is from a half-sister to Compute and Accountant. He is a big-bodied little fellow with a quick turn of speed and a level head and suggests his distinguished sire in many ways. He is bigger than Hermis was as a two-year-old. Mr. Garth will winter the string of C. C. Smith-son at Kenning. Theodore Coles recently turned the Smlthsou horses over to Lewis Garth at Norfolk, and that successful young trainer shipped them here.
