WINNERS AT SHOET PEICES FIVE ODDS-ON FAVOKITES SCORE IN SUCCESSION AT COLUMBIA. Might Have Been Clean Sweep for First Choices hut for Mishap at the Post in the Opening Dash Caused hy Gigantic Captain John. Columbia; S. C.f December 10. Short-priced favorites all of tliem at odds-on were returned winners in live of the contests at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. The favorites would have made it a clean sweep, but for a mishap at the start in the opening race, which was responsible for Tom Shaws failure, as he was best, judging by his running. A peculiar feature of. the racing was that all the winners, with the exception of Seneca and Sea Swell, were quoted at strikingly short odds, considering their showings the previous time out. Troy Weight, winner of the fourth race, went to the front in the first epiarter and held his opposition safe thereafter. Ambrose, astride Montagnie In tilts race, came in for criticism on account of the seemingly listless fashion in which he rode. The steeplechase over the short course proved easy for The Speaker, on which W. Allen had the mount. The horse was backed into favoritism and under Improved handling, won as his rider pleased, with Sam Itall in second place and the others distant trailers. Black Itridge came to grief in the race at the twelfth hedge, enabling Dr. Heard to take third money. Dr. Burcli was benefited by the mix-up at the start of the first race and succeeded in outstaying Tennessee Hoy, with Old Boy, the early pacemaker, winding up in advance of the others. Seneca came right back with an impressive victory when lie accounted for the purse in the second race, and Sea Swell made it a double for "Doc" Streett. Jockey C. Turner,: after winning with Troy Weight, followed with a victory on V. Powers in the succeeding race. After the Ccsarion horse Sea Swell galloped home an easy winner in the sixth race, he changed hands. E. K. Barker securing him on bis bid of 00 over the entered price. "Doc" Streett had exercised great patience with Sea Swell and had succeeded in getting him back to the races after he had been passed up as a hopeless cripple. Todays victory I was the second he had scored here. Captain John, the gigantic son of Yellow Tail and Playful, a most erratic horse at the post, broke up the start for the first race this afternoon. When the barrier was lifted Captain John bolted across his company, causing half the boys to pull up, with the result that they left the post in Indian file. It was no fault of starter Milton that he break was such a bad one. Captain John will not cause trouble in the future, as he will be barred from starting hereafter. Jockey Jost was suspended for three days. Cook for two days, and Lindsay for the rest of the meeting for disobedience at the post. W. It. Carsons useful plater Hatteras is reported as being in a bad way. The horse was taken sick a few days ago and his temperature this morning was J01. J. W. Hedrick announced that he would purchase a few mares and breed them to his Pessara stallion Montgomery.
