1 YAMvE QUITS JUABEZ RING PROMINENT BOOKMAKER DECIDES TO CEASE LAYING ODDS AT MEXICAN TRACK. Decision Follows Conference with Manager M. J. Winn Regarding Criticism That Had Been Made — Kootenay Takes Handicap, El Paso. Tow. January 13. — Racing conditions continue satisfactory at -Ii.ar.z. The patronage is ;;*..l an. I the volume of betting is sutiieient :o satisfy the bookmakers who are doing business. Ir is ■■ , .lent that, alter two unprofitable seasons, the spurt is finally on a substantial hasis here. The boraemen who have ast in their lot with the Jockey Club lu.ir.-z are well s.-nislinl uirh the way things are going. Those trainers who are here this winter for the tirst time agree with their predecessors that tin- Juarez course is an especially desirable one to race over, so far as ;:- effects nnon horses Is concerned. It is a matter of comment that horses 1 better here than at most other places, a circumstance that is due. no doubt, to the high altitude. The track Itself is of a formation dill. -rent from any other in the country, being composed for the most pari of native soil called "a. lob.-." which, when dry. yields when trod anon, ami rebounds like rubber when the pressure is removed. For this reason 1 is seldom that em- hears ..f a horse breaking down; in fact, it is probably the beat track ever bull to race a bad-legged horse over. At a conference today between W. ■■ Yank. bookmaker and owner, and M. J. Winn, manager of the Juarez track, it was suggested by the fount! that, in view of certain criticisms, it would be to the best interests of the turf that he lease opera lions as a bookmaker here. Mr. Winn being of the same opinion, W. O. Yauke will not in the future make book at the Juarez track. Mr. Yank.- has been one of the most Influential factors in the Juarez ring since the racing was inaugurated there. favorites went down to defeat in every race today and tin- public were at sea all afternoon. Tin-handicap was won by the greatly improved and consistent Kootenay. which, leaving the post in last. position, ran around his opposition and got up to win from Pride ..f Uaunore. Unfortunately for tin backers of Lackrose and Jim H.isey. they were both put out of the running by Kootenay crossing in front of th.-m while Bearing the half mile p,,.;:.. and neither of them was a coirrerJrlcr thereafter. Marxo, a o.kI filly belonging to Ramon Maeias. of Mexico City, was jump -.1 on by Acgnfn and se v.-rely cut down during the running of the fifth race. P. M. Hopper hid Pound and Round up from 110 to S405 after he won the la-t race, but the horse remained in B. J. Barnes stable. J. P. Atkin wiled today that he would reach here on Monday and begin booking at once. Mblesworth was taken with severe cramps during the second ra.-e. while riding Lone Star, and his r. uiainin. engagements were cancelled.
