Sweeney, w. ». Vincent, w. McKiderry. it. g. Martin. G. II. Coyie, I". Otis and J. W. Young. While this shipment does not represent the usually large number of racers sent north for the opening campaign in Kentucky, siill it makes up in quality for the lack of quantity. There was, at all times, during the 102 days of racing at Juarez, excellent sport and a vast majority of the horses which made this possible will be at the Downs, reinforced bv the best of the horses now running at Charleston, in addition there will be those horses that wintered at Lexington and vicinity. It is certain that the class of racing in Louisville this spring will be up to the usual high standard. The most notable arrival during the week at Douglas Park was Major T. C. McDowells The Manager, regarded by his owner and others as a real contender for Kentucky Derby honors this spiing. The Manager heads the McDowell band which is made up of Affable. Accord, Nonpareil, Star Jasmine, True P.lue, McCorkle. Understudy. Star Actress, Old Guard. lima and four unnamed colts. The Manager looks to be in tine condition. In truth, all of the McDowell horses wintered well. Major McDowell expresses the belief that The Manager must be seriously reckoned with in the Derby. This son of Voter and Rraccgirdlo met defeat but once as a two-year-old. his most notable victory being In the Breeders Futurity. The major Is of the opinion that Catesby Woodfords Sonada will prove a dangerous factor in the Derby. He bases this belief upon some of the trials of Sonada on the Exposition track, a half mile course near Charleston. Jack McCormack. who for years was foreman for S. C. Hildreth, is now in charge of Sonada. and he pronounces the colt a good one. Peter Wimmer originally owned a half interest in Sonada. but disposed of it to Mr. Woodford. Mr. Wimmer. according to reports from Charleston, shares the belief of Major McDowell concerning the chance of Sonada in the Kentucky Derby. Major McDowell is optimistic relative to his stable and racing conditions in general. He is confident that on the Kentucky courses this spring and sum mer some really good horses will be developed. He is pinning his faith, in addition to The Manager, to such horses as True Blue, a bay filly bv Hastings — Miss Gussie; Affable, a bay filly by Hastings — St. Agnes: Star Jasmine, a brown filly by Ogden — Star Cat. and McCorkle, a bay colt by" Disguise — Quard ruplex. McCorkle is owned by W. F. McCrackon, of Canada. This colt showed great speed in his yearling trials. He is an eligible in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington. In a letter written to Lyman H. Davis, secretary of the New Louisville Jockey Club, handicapper Edward Jasper, who will be Mr. Davis assistant at the Downs, says that beyond question one of the star two-year-olds to be raced here this spring will be the unbeaten Hawthorn, the sou of Hastings and White Thorn. He says that all of the praise bestowed upon this horse is justified. He expects him to lie the champion two-year-old of the season. W. II. Fizer will come to Kentucky from Juarez feeling that he has shook off the "hoodoo that clung to bim persistently last year. He has had good luck in Mexico, having won twenty-eight races and approximately ,500 in purses. Jockey R. Carter is coming to Churchill Downs from Mexico with E. F. Wrights stable. Among the horses in the Wright string are Arasee and BP of Fortune. Arasee has been entered for the Clark and Churchill Downs Handicaps. Kit of Fortune is also eligible for several sellinz stakes. This horse has won some good races up to a mile and an eighth. He is an exceptionally big thoroughbred.
