INVENTS NEW PARIMUTUEL MACHINE Hamilton Ont April S Stephen Davidson of this city has iuvented a new parimutuel betting ma ¬ chine The chief advantage this new invention af ¬ fords to bettors is given by a register board which shows the total amount of money bet ou each horse to come first and the grand total on the Held TIJ place and show money is also registered in the same way so that a man can tell with little trouble what price any horse will pay The machine consists of one central board which has room for twenty or more entries the center of the board showing the name of the horses jockeys weights and post positions The great advantage the machine has over all others is that it works automatically It is claimed that with skilled oper ¬ ators it can be operated much more quickly than any other machine in use At the close of each race the board is cleared by the chief calculator and just as the barrier goes up the pressing of a button in the judges stand stops the machine and locks the ticket rack which means that no more betting can be dona even if the clerks desired to Issue a ticket The board is twenty feet high and the letters are so large that they can lie seen from any part of ths ordinary betting enclosure With the grand total and the number of tickets issued registered by the machine the calculators can start paying off on the race almost immediately after it is run while under the old system there is always some delay delayAll All tickets sold on any entry bear a secret serial number which is known only to the chief calculator who at the proper time turns the number over to the cashier who is protected by paying only on tickets that bear the secret numbers The betting is not done like it is under the system in vogue at Wood ¬ bine Instead of there being machines for straight place and show bets there is a separate wicket for each horse in the race at which it may be backed for first second or third In case there Is heavy support for any one horse two or three wickets may be used to take bets on it and all will register ou the central board Then if there are two or three horses in the race for which there is little backing they can be bet on at the one wicket Ottawa Jockey Club representatives who visited Hamilton some weeks ago inspected the machine and have ordered one for experimental purposes
