THE KEMPTON QUEENS PBIZE WINNEK Concerning the Americanbred winner of the rich Kemptou Park Queens Prize London Sporting Life of April 12 says Though it is a little late in the day some consideration may bis given to the pedi ¬ gree of Duke of Sparta II the winner of the Queens Prize at Kemptou last Monday The more so lccause he appears to be one of the exceptions to the general run of Americanbred horses that is to say a stayer When however his pedigree comes to be examined in detail any surprise occasioned by his display of stamina Quickly vanishes True his sire Dieudonnc was renowned for speed rather than staying power but even in Dicudonnes case there are those stout horses Kosebery and Isonomy at th second remove Duke of Sparta II s dam was Jovita a chestnut mare bred In 1898 by Mr J B Haggin at Kancho del Paso in California She was by the imported Bassctlaw son of St Simon out of Santa Kita by Virgil out of Madam Dudley by Lexington out of imx rted Britannia by The Flying Dutchman Jovita herself was never trained and Duke of Sparta II was her third and last produce for she died in 1908 the year after he was foaled Santa Rita won several races In America as a two and threeyearold and was the dam of useful win ¬ ners But the main point for consideration is that through St Simon Blair Athol and Lexington Jovita was very likely to have acquired the heritable characters that make for stamina Duke of Sparta II was offered for sale as a yearling in the States but presumably did not make his reserve for the same autumn lie was in the ring at Newmarket and 1 sold for Gogs only The following year his only success was gained in a Juvenile Selling Plate at Alexandra Park and he was then bought in for 210gs At that time he was called DonnezMoi Meanwhile he has made substantial progress under the fostering care of his trainer Alf Sadler Jr and even yet we may not have seen the best oC him
