AMERICAN COLTS TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS For the second time in the history of the English turf The Two Thousand Guineas first of the classic races and frequently a guide post to the Epsom Derby winner has fallen to an American bred horse and an American owner The first occa ¬ sion was when iiv I90S August Belmonts Norman III a son of Octagon Nineveh won the event from Sir Archibald White Eagle and fourteen unplaced competitors The second was on Wednesday after noon when H B Durycas great colt Sweeper II under Danny Mahcrs masterly guidance galloped over the winning line victorious over the flower of Englands threeyearolds Lomond exccpted Mr L Neumans 100 to 1 outsider Jaeger a bay colt by Eager Mesauge was second with C Bower Ismays brown colt Hall Cross by Desmond Altesse third As unexpected as Jaegers conspicuous showing was the failure of the even money favorite White Star to finish better than fourth This colt a brother to last years winner Snnstar has been heavily backed to win tho Epsom Derby and at latest advices was a hot favorite at such short odds as 3 to 1 1There There is nothing surprising about the victory of Sweeper II He ran four times last year in England and in such fashion as to make him the equal at least of any other horse of his age in training His first start was at Ascot June 14 in the Fit tyNInth Triennial Stakes which he won and as a coincidence with his first start as a threeyearold Jaeger was second His next race he lost because being a tur ¬ bulent and unruly character and having up a jockey unable to control his wayward tendencies he swervxl back and forth over the track and yet finished a good third to White Star and Melody This was in the July Stakes at Newmarket June 27 At Good ¬ wood July 25 he carried IM pounds and with the crack French jockey Stern on his back won the Richmond Stakes from Charminn Melody Absurd Monotone and Burgee His next and last race of the year was in the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket October 11 Here he finished second to Absurd with White Star third and another good American colt Cataract among the unplaced ones onesSweeper Sweeper II is a son of Broomstick and Ravello II and so a halfbrother to the good horse Frank Gill which ran so well in this country a few years back He is in the Derby and St Lcger and is otherwise heavily engaged His time for the mile route of th Two Thousand Guineas was 138 not quite so good as Sun Stars 137 last year It was his first start this year and the result was such as to make II P Whitney rejoice in the fact that he is the owner of Broomstick
