FREE LANCE AN IMPROVED COLT George J Long Conceded to Have an Outside Chance to Win Kentucky Derby Kentucky Gossip Louisville Ky May 2 George J Longs Free Lance is looming up as a dangerous outsider In the Kentucky Derby to be run on Saturday May 11 This good threeyearold has been working impres ¬ sively and with each trial he shows improvement He seems to have a wonderful turn of speed this spring and trainers think he will surely stay the Derby route Free Lance may not win the Kentucky Derby but local horsemen are of the opinion that he is sure to win some good races on the Kentucky circuit this year In case The Manager should nor start in the Derby it is likely that T Koerner will ride Free Lance in tho big event If the McDowell crack does go to the post J Dcavenport will be up on the Long candidate candidateHawthorn Hawthorn which will not be raced again until he is saddled for the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs on Thursday May 1C is at present more strikingly in the public eye than any other twoyearold now in training His seven straight wins and his unbeaten record certainly stamp him us a star The cry of a great many presumably wise horsemen as is usual in such cases is that Haw ¬ thorn has Iwaten nothing as yet He has however defeated a lot of colts and fillies thought to be of good class Hawthorn makes them all look cheap Conservative turfmen believe that the son of Hast ¬ ings is a twoyearold of the sort seen only at long intervals on the turf He has more size than the average twoyearold by far has wonderful length and leverage and when in full motion moves with the speed of an express train No horse can beat him away from the barrier and while some may run past him for an instant he just canters to them when once in his full stride then comes home at his leisure His running in Kentucky so far has verified the high opinion passed upon him by that skilfull and noted trainer Henry McDaniel who said I am going to Cocur dAIene with my twoyearolds I cant beat Hawthorn in Kentucky It is ridiculous to think that Hawthorn can be beaten by a two yearold I believe before the racing season ends in Kentucky no one will he able to scare up an old horse that would even have a chance with him He is a real sensation In my opinion he is as good a twoyearold as the American turf has seen in years yearsThe The track was fast at Churchill Downs today and two Derby candidates worked impressively They were George J Longs Free Lance and H Ben zuigers Patrjche trained by W J Speirs Free Lanco went a mile Some watches caught him in 142 and others had him as fast as 141 He went the first eighth in 12 the quarter in 24 three eighths in 35 half in 50 fiveeighths in 103 threequarters in 110 and seveneighths in 128 lie was in hand all the way and only speeded to the limit in spurts when the boy from time to time lot him down It was as impressive a mile as was ever worked here by a Derby candidate ten days before the race If he can stay the route it is the general idea that Free Lance will take some beating in the big race W raceW J Speirs told the jockey on Patruche to let him go the mile in 145 The son of Broomstick went the distance in 144 and finished out the mile and an eighth pulled down to a walk in 201 He went the first eighth in 13 the quar ¬ ter in 25 threeeighths in 38 half mile in 51 fiveeighths in 105 threequarters in 118 and seveneighths in 131 Much regret was expressed at the Downs today that Cracker Box is out of the Derby The son of Octagon is not broken down as was reported at Lexington last night In his last work here he seemingly wrenched himself and the injury will only cause him to be out of training for a time As this however will keep him out of his principal engagements this spring and early summer his owner C J Casey may decide not to attempt to race him until fall Both Mr Casev and the colts trainer William Hurley keenly regret the mishap as they believed he had a royal chance to win the Derby DerbySwarfs Swarfs Hill a speedy filly in Wayne Toplins stable illustrated this morning how extremely fast the track is at the Downs when in good condition by going half a mile in 4S like a filly which will run a good race at a mile and a sixteenth which is the distance of the Kentucky Oaks Mr Mattingly today received word from Owensboro that Madeline the dam of this filly recently dropped a fine colt by Plaudit He has decided to mate her again this year with the Kentucky Derby winner of 1S98 1S98Wayne Wayne Toplin came from Lexington today to superintend the working of his horses at the Downs Ho reports that Maj T C McDowell told him that The Manager was doing well and that he expected to work the great colt today at Lexington He says that Major McDowell is confident now that the son of Voter has suffered no Illeffects from his slight illness and he told Mr Toplin that if nothing more happened to The Manager in training he would surely start in the Kentucky Derby Mr Toplin does not think Worths defeat by the speedy Grover Hughes has any bearing on the race he will run in the Derby He thinks his opinion is backed up bv the fact that at Lexington last spring Meridian the latest Derby winner here was beaten in his first start of the season in the same sort of a rico bv that noted sprinter Chapul tepee J JManager Manager M J Winn announced today
