THOMAS C MCDOWELLS CANDIDATE FOR KENTUCKY DERBY HONORS THIS YEAR THE MANAGER CH C 3 BY VOTEE BRACEGIRDLE BRACEGIRDLEWhether Whether The Manager Is to place another Kentucky Derby to the credit of Thomas C McDowell next Saturday or not It isquitc sure that be can only he heaten by a good race horse because he is a proved god race horse himself and not likely to succumb to any but his own kind Last year he made his debut as a twoyearold at the Lexington Spring meeting May 4 In a purse at four and a half furlongs Demon ¬ strating that no mistake had been made In reports of his great speed in training gallops he won by four lengths in 54 with Calisse second and Guarauola third Crystal Domino Wheelwright and three more run ¬ ning unplaced His next essay was In the valuable Breeders Futurity at a half mile run May 9 This he wan by two lengths in 48 with Bachelor Girl second Wheelwright third and ten more of the best twoyear olds In Kentucky unplaced His third start was in a purse race at Latonia June 21 The distance was five furlongs and he won in the same easy fashion that had characterized his previous races He carried 121 pounds to 109 on Wheelwright Hi on Presumption and 100 on the other two starters ran the distance in the superlatively fast time of 59 and won by two lengths from Wheelwright with Presumption third June 21 he won the Harold Stakes over a muddy track but only beat Presumption a half length with Dila ¬ tory a bad third He carried 121 pounds to Presumptions 112 and ran the five furlongs of the race in 102 His sole defeat and his last race of the year was in the Cincinnati Trophy July 8 at live and a half furlongs He carried 124 pounds and the track was heavy Lady Lightning won with Presumption second and Auion third The Manager was always badly beaten Subsequently it was discovered that he had gone amiss to such an extefit that he was at once thrown out of training and was raced no more in 1911 1911When When the time for training operations had arrived this year he had fully recovered from his ailment ami grown into a magnificent appearing young horse Progressing favorably in training and as he ripened giving satisfactory evidence of still possessing the electric speed of his early racing last year he was threatening to become first favorite for the Derby until suddenly taken with a fever recently Consterna ¬ tion followed a rciort that the good colt was at the verge of death Fortunately the report was incorrect Tlio Manager speedily recovered from his disorder and lias since then been working so well that he has been named to start in a race Monday His record is as follows followsYoar Yoar Age Sts 1st 2nd 3rd Unp Won 1911 254001 7003
