Hawthorn with his stable companion Blue Jay arrived safely yesterday at the Downs lie came from Lexington in charge of his trainer W S Trevey Mr Trevey says that Hawthorn won his races at Lexington just like he earned his five victories at Juarez In the Iroquois Stakes at Lexington the Knapp stable sent Yankee Notions presumably the best juvenile in the band against Hawthorn Yankee Notions broke away from the post to a flying start and his rider Shilling sat down to make him run every Inch of the way They had gone only a short dis ¬ tance when Shilling looked back only to see Haw ¬ thorns head at his saddle Hawthorn was going comfortably Shilling said to Molesworth the jockey on Hawthorn That must be a Derby horse yon are riding Then ho took Yankee Notions in hand realizing it was useless to expect to beat the son of Hastings Mr Trevey says that an eastern turfman has been negotiating with G H Coyle for the purchase of Hawthorn A price has been set but the amount will not be made known unless the deal falls through II C Hallenbeck the New York turfman never has made an offer for Haw ¬ thorn as has been reported Mr Hallenbccks trainer Frank Taylor told trainer Trevey that he would like to have the unbeaten gelding and the latter replied that there were others It is ru ¬ mored at the Downs that the eastern turfman who seeks to acquire Hawthorn is the breeder of the horse August Belmont It Is said that he desires to ship Hawthorn abroad abroadLon Lon Jones breeder of Azyiade arrived yesterday at the Downs with four horses three of which are twoyearolds The old Lexington in fine condition and his trainer James S Everman savs he lost the Breeders Futurity only through crowding by jockey Shilling who rode Christinas Star In that race He declares that Shillings tac ¬ tics not only beat Forward for first money but kept his own mount from finishing second it being his idea that but for the interference both Forward and Christmas Star would have beaten Helios Trainer Everman still thinks this son of Ccsarion has a chance to beat any colt now in training He intimated this morning that he had no intention of scratching him in the Bashford Manor Stakes be ¬ cause the unbeaten Hawthorn is engaged in that event eventLon Lon Jones has two additions to his stable that were not noted in his list published when he first arrived at the Downs They are the fouryearold lilly Joyance and the twoyearold black filly Doc tus by Cesarion Wish The latter belongs to Dr I B Becler of New Albany Ind who is a new ¬ comer to the turf This filly is engaged In the Debutante Stakes here Mr Jones has bred his mares Fatality and Francis I to stallions at George J Longs Bashford Manor Farm this spring He mated Fatality with Alvescot and Francis I with Hempronius Mr Jones will mate Miss C the dam of II C Hallcnbacks crack filly Azyiade with the Kentucky springTl Derby winner Sir Iliion this spring Tl C McDowell will not ship The Manager from Lexington until Thursday He seems to think now that his great colts slight sickness did not retard Ills Derby preparation to any extent and the few days letup the son of Voter had as a consequence of the attack has if anything done him good Turf ¬ men who were at the Downs this morning and on terms of great intimacy with the noted Lexington horseman said Major McDowell was never as con ¬ fident of winning a race ns he is that he will cap ¬ ture the Derby this spring with his crack colt He has seen both Worth and Sonada in action and believes that neither has a chance to defeat The Manager over the Derby route routeWhile While grazing In the center field at the Downs J R Wainwrights good twoyearold colt High Star wrenched a leg Tlie Injury is trifling lint will cause trainer Fred Luzadcr to let up on the colt for a few days He said this morning it would only prevent him from running High Star during the first few days of the meeting He had contemplated starting him in the fifth race for twoyearold colts and geldings on Derby day He also heard from Lexington that Royal Captive came out of her last race quite lame and that good marc may be laid up for a while Mr Luzader is sweet on his colt A J Gorey a son of Miller He too cut himself a little iu his last trial due to working in the mud for which the colt seems to have an aversion The ailment however is not sufficient to keep him from taking his daily work A J Gorey is a late foal having lieen foaled May 20 Catesby Woodford who bred him told Mr Luzader at Lexington that A J Gorey is the latest foal ever dropped at Rceland Stud StudR R F Carman will not make another trip to Lexing ¬ ton this week He ordered several of his horses shipped from there last night to the Downs and the others will come here at the close of the Lex ¬ ington meeting Mr Carmans three great cripples The Turk Semprolns and Bonnie Kelso all seem now to l e working soundly enough to race soon He said at the Downs today that he hoped to be able to race every horse In his big stable here hereFrank Frank Smith has reached Douglas Park with his string composed chiefly of maidens He has two threeyearolds of this class that are said to be promising They are both by Barney Schreibers famous race horse Deutschlaml DeutschlamlGeorge George Bright of this city who has bought from J Hoffman the useful filly Ella Grane will leave her in trainer Hoffmans care Ella Grane Is the first thoroughbred Mr Bright has owned but he has some fairly wellbred trotters and has takcn a keen interest in running races as well as the harness horse horseThere There aro more good horses now at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park that are slated to run In selling races than ever licfore in the history of Louisville racing There is a disposition upon the part of owners to race most any of their horses lu these races if the top price is high enough They want something like 2500 top price or even 3000 and grading down Secretaries usually hesitate about putting on such races as they usually fail to nil but so far as the meeting at the Downs this spring Is concerned it Is believed all such cventJj will secure sufficient entries to stand
