YOUNG THOROUGHBREDS AT BROOKDALE Thirtyeight Yearlings and Thirty Weanlings Among i Choice Stock at H P Whitneys Bleeding Farm New York July 23 There are still a dozen two yearolds at Harry Iayne Whitneys famous thor ¬ oughbred nursery Brookdale Farm in New Jersey All are in training Jockey Joe Notter has hewn made foreman of the establishment hi Manager lames Uowe and he lias been keeping himself close to riding condition by breaking the yearlings and riding the twoyearolds He knows every foal on the place and has proven himself much more than only one of the best jockeys of recent years One yearsOne of the twoyearolds is Hailed a sister lo Itallot one of the stars of the James It Keene string a few seasons back by Voter Cerito She will doubtless be retained for the stud Another is the filly Wonder a halfsister to Novelty winner of the last Futurity and now in Charles Kohlers French string where he is intended for steeplechas ing The others are all bred in the purple and as tin of the twelve are lillles they will undoubtedly become broodmares of importance importanceMost Most of the interest at this time at Brookdale centers in the yearlings There are thirtyeight of them leu being colts ten geldings and eighteen lillles lilllesOne One of the most impressive of these young racers 5s a slashing bay son of Hamburg and Forget and therefore a brother to Herman 15 Durycas good campaigner Dreamer lie now stands about fifteen hands one but is strongly made and has no sug ¬ gestion of the legginess that this height would naturally indicate He is possessed of a racy looS nig head and is equipped with wonderfully well formed sloping shoulders and powerful quarters Forget has a good one racing in England now in Borrow and a few of her other good ones are Ilylas Oversight Delirium and Dinnu Ken KenA A chestnut colt by Hamburg Mlneola is built on particularly attractive racing lines and in the opin ion of Not lor he is one that cannot fail to make his mark in England whore he will undoubtedly be raced next season He is as sensible as a tliree yearohl oven now and has a way of moving that uggests great speed speedA A chestnut son of Hamburg and Black Venus in a great measure resembles his dam in conformation and he is one that can be picked apart and found Ilawless No youngster at the farm has been more liberally entered in the English stakes and should IK race to his looks he will be a worthy American representative representativeAn An unsexed son of Broomstick and Hearts Desire is a young racer of excellent size and conformation He is of a decidedly racy build arid has all the marks of one that ought to come to hand early earlyA A mating of Broomstick with Tanya daughter of Meddler and Handspuu should produce a thorough ¬ bred worth while and the bay son of this cross looks the part He has a particularly good head and neck splendid shoulders and an abundance of heart space His quarters are powerfully made and right now of a size to suggest a fouryearold fouryearoldThe The chestnut gelding by Burgomaster Belle of Troy is one of the giants of the lot He stands well over the fifteen hands mark and withal he has that compact conformation that suggests sturdy strength and high speed speedSandrias Sandrias sou by Broomstick is the pick of sev ¬ eral who have been privileged to look the Brookdale thoroughbreds over He is a rich bay in color and has a particularly racy appearance about the head and neck His shoulders are well sloped and he is short coupled with powerfully muscled oval quar ters and legs that he carries well under him His temper is excellent and he has a smooth friction less way of moving that should stand him in good stead when he is sent to the races racesA A chestnut son of Broomstick and Whimsical is another that would stand out alone in less distin guished company He resembles his dam a great deal and is built along sturdy lines He is another that will not want for opportunity in engagements should he go through his trials in a way to win a passage to Kngland and into Joyners hands handsA A show exhibit is the son of Hamburg and Yankee Girl He is of large size and from his intelligent head to his wellset tail It would be hard to tiiid a better individual Ho is of goodly size though not up to that of some of the others and his sloping shoulders short back good quarters and shapely legs all tell of quality qualityOf Of the tillles it is probable that the best will be the bay daughter of Broomstick and Artful While racing there was no filly that so completely filled the eye as did Artful and this youngster seems to be a worthy daughter In her very beauty she re ¬ sembles her dam and though essentially feminine in appearance she is of sturdy mold and of fault ¬ less conformation conformationA A daughter of Burgomaster and Blue Girl is a filly with wonderfully good shoulders and for her sex Is wonderfully large of girth She has a short back and her quarters are of such muscular build that fillyFlora she suggests a colt rather than a filly Flora Alac which sent many good ones to the races has a daughter by Burgomaster that is con ¬ structed along sturdy Hues and a Perverse fllly by Hamburg is another that would attract attention in any company companyIt It would be possible to go on through the list without finding one that did not measure up to a standard that is desired in all thoroughbreds There is not a cull on the farm and Brookdale probably never before had within its confines so many embryo champions championsIn In the wide pastures of the farm the matrons are idly roaming and thirty of them have weanlings playing at their sides In that company the same careful selection has been made in breeding and while the little ones have not yet shaped up suffici ¬ ently to venture an opinion on what they will ac ¬ complish when sent to the races they are all of ex ¬ cellent size sizeFollowing Following are the young horses at the
