NEW ZEALANDS GREATEST SIRE DIES Multiform one of the greatest horses bred In New Zealand of late years died recently at Wil ¬ liam Browns Whlttlngham stud in New South Wales Multiform was bred at the Wellington Park Stud hear Auckland by T Morrln in 1894 and was Hold as a yearling to the late G G Stead for 235 guineas He proved a rare burgaln After winning the Challenge Stakes as a fouryearold Multiform was sold to Sir Edward Vincent and shipped to Eng ¬ land Here he ran only three times and owing to wind infirmities ho contracted proved a failure Mr Stead however generously made amends to Sir Edgar Vincent for Multiforms loss of form as he sent him Screw Gun a horse who had done well for him in New Zealand and took back Multiform in exchange Mr Stead brought Multiform back to his native land and he had not reason to regret having parted with Screw Gun to get him back as Multiform at once jumi ed into fame as a sire Sir Edgar Vincent also profited by the exchange as Screw Gun whose name was changed to Seriuga patam won a number of races in England and was also successful hi the Grand Prix at Ostend He is now at tbe stud in South Africa The season of 1905G was the greatest year Multiform had at the stud His threeyearold representatives that year were Noctulfonn Sun God Isolt Cuneiform and Multitid and all but the lastnamed ran in the Stead colors The visit of Noctuiform Sun God and Isolt made to Itandwick in the spring of 1905 will not he forgotten by Australians in a hurry Noctuiform ran away with the A J C Derby in which he was followed home by Sun God and afterwards both Sun God and Isolt won races at the meeting and they went back to New Zealand and swept the boards there at the New Zealand Cup Meeting Nightfall who accompanied them iljd not go back emptyhanded as she won some good races at Rand wick Multilid gained distinction later on by win ¬ ning the New Zealand Cup and Cuneiform won sev ¬ eral important races beating among others the flying Achilles Both Noctuiform and Nightfall like their sire found their way to this country and like him failed here The early successes of Multi ¬ form at the stud were not maintained and he had few winners of note during the past few seasons When the late Mr Steads stud was sold in 190S shortly after bis death William Brown bought Multiform for 3750 guineas London Sportsman
