NOTED TURFMAN ACCEPTS INVITATION Capt James II Rces Cancels Engagement Elsewhere in Order to Preside Over Big St Louis Race St Louis Mo September 10 If the St Louis Cup to be run for here on Thursday September serves no other purpose than to bring back to racing one of its brightest lights it will have fulfilled its objict as a turf event Some days since Joseph A Murphy general manager of the Universal Exposi ¬ tion Company wrote to Capt James II Roes of Memphis asking him to preside over the big race In a reply received yesterday Captain Roes stated that he had accepted an invitation to attend the Levee Convention at Memphis on September 4 5 and 2 but that he had decided to cancel his en ¬ gagement for the 20th and that he would bo here to preside presideCaptain Captain Hees is a member of the linn of James Kees Son of Pittsburgh and owner of the Mem ¬ phis Packet Company of Memphis and is one of the best known men of the south Wealthy in his own right he followed racing not as u professional but because of his great love for the horse and during the time that he presided in the stand he exacted a discipline from horsemen that probably has never been equaled in this country For ten years he has steadily refused to accept any oflicial position in racing and his acceptance of the invitation to pre ¬ side over the big race shows that he realizes and appreciates the efforts of the Universal Exposition Company to revive racing on a high plane
