DAY OF SURPRISES AT MONTREAL Hearts of Oak and Calgary Two Great Disappoint ¬ ments Lcochares Wins Hochelaga Stakes StakesMontreal Montreal Quo September 10 Surprises occurred frequently at Blue Bonnets this afternoon Several horses that looked to stand out over their opposi ¬ tion were beaten The biggest disappointments were Hearts of Oak and Calgary The former was a 1 to 3 favorite in the race that called for Canadianbred twoyearolds while Calgary was a 7 to 1O choice in the Hochelaga Stakes a handicap at six furlongs to which 1000 was added It was the lattcrs first defeat this season In his three previous efforts he had won easily and his people were beginning to think of him seriously as an Epsom Derby possibil ¬ ity In todays race he carried 121 pounds left the barrier in a forward position and was in close pursuit of the pacemaker to the stretch turu when he begun to tire Leochares the winner boat him by two lengths Todays effort was Calgarys first in a long time and it is just possible that he may not have been tiehtened up for a bruising race At all events it might l o well to give him another chance before passing him up as a shattered idol Lrochares ridden by Jimmy Butwell won with plenty in reserve Ho showed keen speed from the outset and at the linish was going along comfort ¬ ably Flabbergast broke Uatfooted and was as good as left at the post postHearts Hearts of Oak was soundly beaten in his race despite the fact that he looked to outclass the oth ¬ ers He broke very slowly and lacked the flight of speed he had displayed in all of his previous efforts In todays race he carried 126 pounds and this appeared to anchor him Auster the winner was bred by Mrs L A Livingston at her Canadian farm at Coburg in Ontario She is a rapid going filly niid showed a Dm turn of speed speedThe The running of the fifth race which was for three ycarold steeplechasers aroused considerable Inte ost among the crosscountry sharps It was the first meeting this season for these young jumpers Gwyn Tompkins who is a past master in the steeple ¬ chase game furnished tho winner In Kingcash a strapping looking colt by Bowling Brook Alcyoiiu II There were several good things in the race but Kingcash proved easily best of the lot He was reserved until the last half mile when ho moved up with good speed and taking an easy lead drew away at his leisure The track record for the dis ¬ tance was materially reduced reducedThe The second and sixth races furnished stirring con ¬ tests tho smallest of margins separating the first two in both of these races Dr Streett was forced to stand a runup of 205 to retain Anavri after ho won the second race Sam Louis did the bidding biddingIf If Highbridge shows up well in the Strathcona Steeplechase tomorrow he may be shipped to Eng land this fall and prepared for next years Grand National Steeplechase Ills owner John B Fell of Philadelphia contemplates going abroad for tho hunting season and may pick up a couple of jumpers while am England EnglandGwvn Gwvn Tompkins has decided to retire his Meddler lilly The Busybody to the stud She will 1 ship ed to Virginia and mated with the imported stallion Seahorse II next spring springMiss Miss Chamblet has purchased tho Hurst Park colt Brosseau from William Walker Brosseau is de ¬ stined for a jumper and will be schooled through the field this winter winterJoseph Joseph McLennan secretary of the Jamestown Jockey Club received instructions from Bob Levy to prepare conditions for six stakes to be run at the Norfolk track this fall The dates which haye been alloted to Jamestown call for a sixteendays meeting Some 150 now stalls are being constructed and enlargedJohn the betting ring Is being enlarged John W Schorr purchased the twoyearold Miss Edith from C O Reed this morninp The latter secured tho filly by the selling raco process at the recent Windsor meeting meetingThe The Connaught Park Jockey Club Ottawa enter ¬ tained on Sunday a largo party of horsemen offici ¬ als and others interested in racing The new course is nearly finished but there will be no racing thero until next June It will have one of tho strongest social clubs allied with racing in Canada There are 100 stockholders The track will cost 150000 It Is only fifteen minutes ride by trolley from tho center of the city of Ottawa
