DOUGLAS PARK REOPENED RACING TAKES PLACE OVER LOUISVILLE TRACK AFTER LAPSE OF FOUR YEARS Buckhorn Carries Colors of R J Mackenzie to Vic ¬ tory in Inaugural Handicap Rain Affects Going but Track Record Is Reduced Louisville Ky September 1C After a lapse of four years racing was resumed at Douglas Park this afternoon under conditions that promised much for the success of this meeting About 0500 persons witnessed the sport and enjoyed the contests im ¬ mensely Among the visitors were all the important persons connected with Kentucky racing and all voiced their satisfaction at the conclusion of the afternoon over the success attending the inaugural days proceedings The immense plant modern in every respect came in for a good deal of praise and was voted into immediate favoritism There need be no fear that the management will suffer for lack of patronage patronageGeneral General Manager John Ilachmeister was highly gratified with the success attending the opening anil expressed his pleasure that not a single marring in ¬ cident occurred during the afternoon The betting was brisk throughout the day and the contests in each instance keen and hard fought from barrier rise to finish The Inaugural Handicap with its 2415 net to the winner was the stellar offering of a good card and resulted in a stirring struggle between Pnckhorn and Princess Callaway with the former successful by a small margiu He was clearly the best in the race and would have won more handily but for the foul riding tactics resorted to by Buxton who was astride Princess Callaway The latter favored by the soft track and in rare form at present showed high speed from the rftart Buckhorn followed her most closely during the first part of the race and moved up fast on the stretch turn Buxton finding himself in danger of being passed began urging his mount towards the outer rail and carried Buekhorn with him Tin colt stood the interference courageously and in the last seventy yards managed to get his head in front Any Iort was enabled to save a good deal of ground on the stretch turn as a result of the others swing ¬ ing wide and he tasily disposed of Starbottle for third money High Private the favorite retired from contention after going threequarters anil John Furlong which might have been a dangerous contender suffered much interference throughout The prospects for a heavy track caused some of tlm owners to withdraw their representatives but tlm addition of Wintergreen Princess Callaway and Donau brought the field up to ten starters Donau acted so erratically that ho was finally left at tlm post and later it yas only with ditliculty that ho could be gotten off the track The judges ruled that his entry should be refused in future Jockey Buxtons rough tactics did not cscane the notice oC the judges and he was suspended for live days daysMany Many withdrawals from the original fifth race WHS responsible for the substitution of a new race It was at six furlongs and engaged platers of fair ability The winner turned up in Morrick which showed a suddenly improved performance as com ¬ pared with his Lexington showing showingThe The third race in which some highly tried sprint ¬ ers engaged furnished the most spectacular contest of the afternoon when Helen Barboe Kootcuay and Caugh Hill came to the finish noses apart in the order named Helen Barbee was the betting favor ¬ ite and the award of the purse to her was well received receivedThe The second race reintroduced the 10000 Haw ¬ thorn and he raced this afternoon in sensational fashion Sprinting into a long lead immediately after the barriers rise he simply played with his opponents and finished in a canter five lengths in advance of Floral Park and Star of Danube Th closing dasii went to Flying Feet with Limpet and Nicias bringing up in second and third places re sKctively Chilton King a newcomer from llavro de Grace accounted for the opening dash with Sam Hirsch in second place and Marshon third thirdAlthough Although the track could not be considered In its best condition surprisingly good time was recorded in nearly all the contests The third race was run in track record time anil the feature race found tlx track record for the mile and a sixteenth reduced by fourfifths of a second when Buckhorn ran tin distance in 1 4i The former records were mado four years ago and since then the oval has hardened considerably When the course is at its best it probably will be accounted the fastest track in the country countryThree Three pronounced favorites two second choices and a third choice comprised the list of winners this afternoon High Privates defeat in the big raw was the worst disappointment He flattered hi supporters for six furlongs and retired thereafter as if short shortCol Col Matt J Winii general manager of tlm Churchill Downs track was among the visitors and expressed great pleasure over the success attendins the opening I look for a
