Auspicious Opening Laurel Md October 1 Thomas Clay McDowell of Kentucky played an important part in the open ¬ ing of the Maryland State Fairs fall season of racing here this afternoon He furnished two of the winners Accord and The Manager the latters victory being achieved in the Inaugnral Handicap 2000 added The Manager picked up 114 pounds was a forward contender from the start and to a driving finish outlasted Froglegs and beat him by half a length The Schorr colt ran a remarkable race Last to leave the barrier and outpaced iu the early running he gradually Improved his position and closing with a great rush was gaining on the winner with every stride He would have beaten him in a few more jumps and his performance was conceded to be a high class effort effortThe The Hallenbeck stable was also in the limelight and gathered two purses one with the twoyearold Hobnob and another with Azyiade The formers victory came only after a long and hard drive in which he just lasted to
