RICHEST AND MOST NOTABLE RACE OF THE YEAR TO BE RON TOMORROW AT CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky October 0 Tlie greatest race of the year in America will be decided at Churchill Downs on Monday next It is the fourmile Keu lucky Endurance Stakes a race originated by the Kentucky State Racing Commission and which is to be a perpetual event of the Kentucky turf turfThis This stake this season is not only a race which has attracted the widest Interest but it is also the richest prize run in this country this season The New Louisville Jockey Club donates 7500 in added money to this event and the winner of the long race will also get a 1000 gold cup as a trophy donated by the Kentucky State Racing Commission Added to this are the fees from subscriptions to the event aud then the starting money which will increase the value of the event materially materiallyIt It is not only a money prize worth winning lint it is sure to add such luster to the victorious horse as to insure his reputation as a wonderful turf per ¬ former as long as racing lasts Tlie fourmile cracks of all ages from the dawn of racing history have proven the stars of turf and stud studThe The first fourmile record holder of great note wa American Eclipse which on May 27 1823 defeated Sir Henry in a race of fourmile heats which r quired twelve miles to decide In this race for the first time four miles was run under 740 Sir Henry winning the first heat In 737 While Sir Henry beat American Eclipse iu this heat that was the horses only near approach to defeat as American Eclipse never lost a race When he was retired he great horse George Martin which ran the distance in 7 He beat the great Reel which noted mare broke down In that race It was her mly tef at 4eorge Martin silsotjured soske good horses and Reel became one of the greatest of Anier lean broodmares The 70000 Hamburg and other stars trace to her Fashion four miles in 732 for a mare and George Martins 733 for a horse stood as the record until Lecoiapte Lexington and Idlewild came upon the turf Lecompte first ran four miles in 725 at New Orleans and defeated Lexington and then the latter beat Lecompte run ¬ ning the distance in 723vi In 1806 on the Center ville course Long Island Idlewild ran four miles in 720 4 and this lowered Fashions record for a mare mareOn On April 2 1855 Lexington ran four miles against time in 719 which stood as the record until August 20 1874 nineteen years later when in a race at Saratoga Fellowcraft ran the distance In 7ll He held the record until September 27 1S7 when the great Ten BroecU ran the distance
