for an overnight race at Juarez but failed to start Iayette is now the prop ¬ erty of J W Edgar and following a retirement of about two years after lie passed out of the iwssesslou of S C Illldreth in whose colors lie meed in 1110 came back to the races this fall at Overland Park Denver where he scored in one of two starts In ordinary company companyFayette Fayette won 28050 for John E Madden as a twoyearold iu 1908 and it was a debatable ques ¬ tion whether he or his stablemate Sir Martiu which good horse has since won distinction in England was the best juvenile racer of that year The general form of the seasons racing pointed to Sir Martin as being the letter of tho two but l y only a small margin Fayette was but little behind his great stablemate in speed and ability to carry weight Ills first start was for a purse at Belmont Park May 19 Not being used to racing he bolted across the track at the start and was practically left at the iwst At the same track May 27 he showed improvement and ran third to Fltz Herbert and Preceptor iu another purse race Then at Grave send June 5 he came out ready for greater things and ran second to Sir Martin iu the Great Americau Stakes and could have won easily himself had It been necessary At the same track June 13 ho won tho rich Tremont Stakes with Sir Martiu sec ¬ ond It was the declared intention to win with Sir Martin but Walter Miller disregarding instructions rushed Fayette into close pursuit of the nonstaying Strike Out at once and after passing the leader did not ease Fayette up to allow Sir Martin to win hut kept him iir front to the finish aud deprived him of his highly valued maiden allowance He had up 115 pounds to 12 on Sir Martin whicli beat Bobbin four lengths for second place placeHaving Having Incurred a penalty Fayette was sent for the first half of the Double Event at Sheepshea Bay Juno 19 and won in a canter by three lengths while Sir Martin had considerable difficulty in disposing of Esperanto by a half length for sec ¬ ond place Each of the Madden colts carried 12 pounds and the result made many consider Fayette the master of Sir Martin ail impression that was dispelled by their subsequent racing however When at the same track eight days later both started In the 25OOO Great Trial Stakes with the same 129 pounds on each it was Sir Martin that was first by a good two lengths while Fayette had his troubles in beating Helmet out by a head for second money However Helmet was a green racer and bumped Fayette several times in the stretch which had con ¬ siderable to do with their close finish In the sec ¬ ond half of the Double Event Sir Martin won again and this time Helmet was second and Fayette third the latter unexpectedly tiring Iwdiy In the stretch struggle In the Saratoga Special at Saratoga Aii gnst St he ran unplaced to Sir Martin Wedding Bells and Mediant The track was heavy and he seemed unable to run freely in the mud In the tuuiUl coveted Hopeful Stakes lie ran third to Helmet and Perseus with Sir Martin a close fourth Helmet and Perseus carried 115 pounds to 130 on Fayette and Sir Martin His next race was In the Futurity Here he ran unplaced to Maskette Sir Martin aud Helmet Then in his last race of the year he run third to Sir Martin and Maskette in the Flatbush Stakes and was retired with tho generally published statement that his next start in a race would be in England and probably for tho Epsom Derby But he remained in this country while Sir Martin went to England and went to the post favorite for the Derby at Epsom Downs In which he fell at Tattenham Comer while running in forward contention As a threeyearold Fayette continued to race in the colors of his breeder until be was purchased in midsummer by S C Hildreth He failed to win a race as a threeyearold but was placed in some ot the big events of eastern racing and thereby added more than 7000 to the aggregate of his winnings It was finally discovered that he had been suffering from an nlceration of the foot which was held to account for his failure to race up to the expectations of his admirers In 1910 when be was four years old Fayet won four of his five starts in the Hildreth color He began this season by winning an overnight handicap at Aqueduct then he ran second to Guy Fisher lu the Excelsior Handicap His remaining victories were in an overnight handicap the Kings County Handicap and the Long Beach Handicap all at Aqueduct He bowed a tendon in winning the lastnamed race and went into the retirenieut from which lie only recently emerged emergedFayette Fayette is described as a horse of strapping pro ¬ portions well distributed weight and liandsouie ap ¬ pearance He was gelded during his long absence from the races and his racing record to date 4s as
