STANDING BY HAWTHORB LOUISVILLE ADMIRERS OF HASTINGS GELDING UNSHAKEN BY FOUNDATIONS WORK Odds Against Latter Candidate Shrink but Haw Hawthorns thorns Remain Unchanged Gossip from fromKentucky Kentucky Sources Louisville Ky April S Interest in the coming Kentucky Derby iml the 10000 Kentucky Handicap continues to grow dully The latter event wlilcli Js set for the opening dav of the coming meeting at Douglas Park m May 20 bids fair to lie an event if as much Interest as the date of the race ap ¬ proaches as the Derby is at the present rime These two big races will undoubtedly shine in turf history as lioth hid fair to result in contests not onlv highly sensational lint of recordbreaking character The Kentucky Derby coming first anil in a measure settling the question of supremacy among the threeyearolds will add interest to the Kentucky Handicap as a majority of the great threeyearolds that will contest for Derby honors are eligible to the Douglas Park race raceThe The sensational work for the Derby by C J Mc Kcnnas Nasturtium colt Foundation at Iexington last week does not even shake the faith of the local turfmen in Hawthorns Derby chances and while the formers odds have shrunk no better priiv is obtainable on I l Huschemeyers crack gelding for the big race The followers of the latter cannot sec how Foundation can improve sutlieiently over his twoyearold form to lie a contender in the big race with either Hawthorn or Helios though lie showed about as good as a kinder garter performer as did Spokane which beat the sensational Proctor Kiiott in the Kentucky Derby of 18SO 18SOThere There are turfmen who cling to the belief that had not Sam Hryant taken Proctor Knott to Nashville that spring to run in the 2000 Sweepstakes that Spokane would never have beaten him ill the Ken ¬ tucky classic He also it will be recollected de fpiiteil htm In the Clark Stakes and the American Derby but when Proctor Knott finally returned to his best form he turned the tables on Spokane in the Sheridan Stakes and then weuVOWPIxinsJJrauch where in the Omnibus Stakes he ran second to ltmgStreet finishing in front of the great Halvator HalvatorTni Tni admirers of Hawthorn have wonderful faith ill the geldings trainer W S Trevey He is among the most experienced of living horsemen and un ¬ doubtedly knows every hair in the hide of his great gelding His admirers say that ho will make no mistake in the training of the son of Hastings and as he only has two other horses to care for in his stable he can accord the Kiischeraeyer Derby can ¬ didate evory necessary attention Then is hardly in hour in the day that Trovey does not see his charge and even in Ihe night he is in constant touch with his stable and an able assistant keeps him posted as to Hawthorns condition when he is away from the barn Another thing in his favor is the fact that J Ixiftns will have the mount on him cud this rider understands the great gelding perhaps better than any jockey who has ever ridden him in a race raceThe The work of Foundation however has added new zest to the discussion now going on concerning the big race as often it is just such a colt as this that as a threeryearold has defeated others which showed vast superiority as twoyearolds Hack as far as 1882 Apollo ligured as a notable instance by defeating the famous Hunnymede which as a twovearold the season previous was a most sen sat ional colt Kouso in 1870 was another such when he beat Kimball almost invincible as a two yearold yearoldHut Hut regardless of whether the Kentucky Derby winner of 1013 is Hawthorn Helios Foundation or siny of the other great cracks engaged in it in eluding Ten Point Yankee Notions and Ieochares it umiuestionably will be one of the greatest con ¬ tests in the history of tin race as well as the richest Derby in money value ever run in this state stateThe The various candidates for the 10000 Kentucky Handicap to be run on the opening day at Douglas Park on Monday Mav 20 are working well Frog legs J W Schorrs crack fouryearold could hardly look better It 1 Mackenzies Hncklioru appears to lie not far from lit even now News from Lexington Is to the effect that The Manager is going along satisfactorily The Manager is T C McDowells great fouryearold High Private never looked lustier than now although he has been showing slightly sore in recent trials However this is not unusual for this old gelding geldingThese These two stir events which will respectively inaugurate the two greatest race meetings in Louisville are sure to be memorable contests That no horse will have a walkover in either of them seems certain certainAlthough Although the local meetings are four weeks away tin iMmm is already on Kven this early reserva ¬ tions are being made
