HORSES FOR NEW YORK RACING Prominent Staples of the East Expected to Furnish Material for HighClass Sport New York April S The proposed revival of rac ¬ ing in this state with a meeting beginning at Bel ¬ mont Park on Memorial Day is l elng eagerly looked forward to SiKcnlation as to the horses that are likely to provide the sport is already indulged in It is taken for granted that the prominent stables to be represented will include those of August Bel ¬ mont chairman of the Jockey Club Richard T Wilson Harry Payne Whitney II K Knapp who races under the name of the Oneck Stable II C llallenbeck Charles Kohler who has a winning string in England and France in addition to the young horses he has in training In this country Capt E B Cassatt Thomas Fortune Ryan Andrew Miller Thomas Monahaii Qulncy Stable Frederick Johnson John Sanford James Butler George D Widener Joseph E Widener Thomas Hitchcock Francis R Hitchcock A L Aste Dr J S Tyrec James Rowe Albert Simons Mrs L A Livingston R F Carman F J Ions T C McDowell II G Bedwell J W Burttschell James Fitzsimnions F K Brown II T Oxnard J E Madden G W Lang don F J Nolan R Parr William Garth P S P Randolph William Lakeland R E AVatkins S Ross G P Eustis aud others othersMen Men high up in the councils of the Jockey Club say that it is a matter of course that racing will be carried on in accordance with the laws and declare it is an insult to our most prominent publlo spirited citizens to suppose otherwise The announcement that the Keene Memorial Svill be one of the stakes to be perpetuated when the sport is reestablished is gratifying to many The late Mr Keene did much to popularize the turf by the wonderful successes achieved by his horses and by the knoyledge that his stable like many others owned by the liest turfmen was managed in a straight forward manner The exact conditions of the Keene Memorial will be made public in a few days and it is likelv that this race will take rank in the public affection with the Withers Belmont Lawrence Realization and Whitney Memorial all named in honor of men to whom the sport Is deeply Indebted i There will be no conflict of racing dales between the Piping Rock spring meeting and that at Bel uiont Park With Belmont Park conducting racing each Tuesday Thursday and Saturday from May 30 to July 5 two of the June days that had been al ¬ lotted to the Piping Rock Association June 5 and 7 conflict with Belmont Park For that week the racing will be conducted at Beluioat Park Monday Tuesday and Wednesday leaving the last half of the week to the Piping Rock Club and thereby af ¬ fording a full week of the sport sportThat That the return of racing to the state of New 1ork is of worldwide importance is shown by the way in which the news has been received in for ¬ eign lands The London Pall Mall Gazette re ¬ ferring to the revival has this to say Perhaps it may be too much to expect that the decision of the American courts will at once restore their IKJ sition to the level occupied before the crazy antibetting crusade gained its end But assuredly assuming that the new decision holds good it will In due course materially reduce the number of Americanbred countryThe horses running in this country The New York Herald makees the following editorial comment commentThough Though the ollieial announcement of a revival of racing in this state has been for some time dis ¬ counted by the readers of the Herald none the less will the news be hailed witli acclamation by all classes That the great state of New York should for three years have been deprived of so popular a recreation because of illfounded fears of young men going wrong is one of the most remarkable things connected with the many mysteries of the era AVhlle the Continental countries have been cultivating the breeding of the racer as a foundation for the horse for military purposes this conntrv has been doing its best or its worst to wipe out the thoroughbred Thanks to its loyal supporters how ¬ ever there is a brighter day in store aud with the announced revival of the snort at Helmout Park on Memorial Day there will come new hope for those who know the value of racing In Its bearings on the development of the horse
