FAST TIMES AT SPRINTING DISTANCES AVhUe no new American records for half a mile fiveeighths or threequarters havo recently been made the racing of 1912 and 1913 to date has been productive of the usual number of fast run races at sprinting distances and in several instances the exist ¬ ing records have l con closely approached The art of track conditioning in which striking progress was made a few years back lf s apparently reached tho stage where further iiimrovement need not be ex ¬ pected Thus oue of thtr jnost potent factors in the recordbreaking epocli through which the American turf passed in recent years has boon eliminated eliminatedEven Even In these days tjf fast iierformauces a half mile in forty eight seconds is looked upon as a meri ¬ torious feat Since January 1 1912 there have been thirtyfive halfmile races in this country in which Hie winner has run the distaiice in 4S or better The record for half a mile is 4G and is held jointly by Donau and Anton Each carried lli pounds Donau first establishing the mark in a race over the marvelously fast Santa Anita Park track in Southern California March 13 1109 and Aiuii equalling it on February 9 1911 at Juarez Tluriny the season when that Mexican course was tho scime of some sensationally fast performances The fast ¬ est half mile performance during the period referred to stands to the credit ufIuquieta a tilly that raced promisingly for George M Odoni in her early two yearold form At Juarez February 9 1912 sh ran tho distance in 4G This and other ex ¬ traordinary performances are included in tho sub ¬ rec ¬ ord of 111 held jointly by Chapultepec Prince Ahmed and Priscilliau Chapultopec made his rec ¬ ord over tho Sanja Anita course December 28 190S with 112 pounds up Prince Ahmed equaled Chap ultepecs performance over the Empire City track at Yonkers N Y July 29 1909 and it was fur ¬ ther equaled by August Belmonts Priscillian at Hanlilton Ont June 19 1911 Prince Ahmed car ¬ ried 117 pounds and Priscillian 113 Aside from Closer tho fastest six furlong races of 1912 and 1913 were run by Sebago Granite and Jim Basey each of which scored a mark of 1 11 Instances of the running of
