WILL ABANDON THE MUTUELS Management of the Coear dAlene Track Announces a Return to Bookmaking Spokane Wash April 20 At a meeting of the board of directors of the Coeur dAlene Fair and Racing Association held this morning it was decided to abandon the inutucls and return to Iwokniaklng There was only one dissenting vote and that was cast by Frank W Smith of Spokane The members of the board claimed that after a trial of eight days they had reached the conclusion that the patronage of the machines had not increascd enough to warrant their continuance The association has been meeting with a daily deficit The local public was slow to taiki to this method of wagering and the weather which has been extremely cold for this season of the year also served to keep the attendance down The betting ring will be pro ¬ rated to the value of the purses distributed daily anil the following bookmakers will draw in on Thursday W 11 Engstrom who is expected here from Havre de Grace George Cosgrove Joe Dinkol spiel Byron McNutt and Leslie Belt It is the intention of the association to allow no bookmaker to cut in who is not a reputable person A petition was circulated among the horsemen here yesterday requesting the association to continue with the niutuel system of wagering It received almost every horsemans signature at the track but the directors could not see their way clear to comply with the request requestIt It was cold and disagreeable at the track this afternoon The racing was formful Dutch Rock won his race thanks to ai skilful ride C W Kennon captured the fourth race one mile in ai hard drive with Shooting Spray which made all the pace AlKiund well thought of by the public tried to run to the outer fence on the far turn He lost considerable ground thereby which ho was unable to make up
