HAWTHORNS ADMIRERS REMAIN LOYAL Ten Points Winning Performances Fail to Shake Confidence of Oteldings Trainer Louisville Ky April 30 Arguments are now at white heat In local turf circles over the relative merits of C F Busehcmeyers great gelding Haw ¬ thorn and A L Asles eastern trained colt Ten Point which now appear Mire to meet in the Ken lucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 10 10Ten Ten Point has won his only two starts this season and Hawthorn lias taken las only start Both have scored with ease There are a good many pre ¬ sumably shrewd judges who think that Ten Point may defeat the Ruschemeyer crack la the Kentucky classic if only for the reason that in many cases high class colts have shown superiority over high class geldings in races at the Derby distance Ex ¬ perts concede that this may be the cae in the late summer and fall but it is maintained by some that In early spring the geldings generally get the best of the argument with the colts coltsIn In 1881 the gelding Apollo defeated the famous Ruuiiyniede in tile Kentucky Derby and Typhoon II another gelding in 17 lowered the colors of the mighty Ornament in this event In 1SSS in the Kentucky Derby Macbeth II defeated the hot favorite Galifet Like Apollo ami Typhoon II Macbeth II was a gelding while Runnymede Orii incut and Galifet were colts coltsII II is true that Spokane dufeated Proctor Knot a gelding in the Derby of 1S8SI but the iinish in that race has always been questionable and to this day many contend that Siim Riyants son of Luke Blackburn should have been placed rirst upoa that occasion occasionThe The fact that geldings have in ninny cases our raced colts in the early spring of the year is consid ¬ ered to be due to the unsexed horse requiring less training to tit him for a long race than a colt The fact that tin two liest twoyearolds out last season were both geldings hears out the statement that they come earlier to their best racing form than a colt Ten Point for instance was never mentioned much as a racing prospect until last falU wbUe from early January and all hrongh the spring and summer turfmen were singing the praises of Haw thorn and Helios lioth the last noted performers are geldings while Ten Point of course is a colt coltLocal Local ulmiiers of Hawthorn coneidp that Ten Point may be the great racer that he Is proclaimed to be but they still are confident of Hawthorns ability to win the Derby They pointful that Teji Point has won two short races and that there is i assurance that he can win a race of a mile and a quarter when stacked tip against a great runner like Hawthorn which will look him 111 the eye dur ¬ ing every quarter of the Deri race raceThe The numerous backers if IHawthorn In the future books are deriving much comfort from the contidence displayed by W S Trevey the trainer of the Buschemeyer crack Ttcvey is paying little atten ¬ tion to the pretensions of Ten Point Foundation or any of the other Derby cligibles He believes that on May 10 Hawthorn will beat any horse in train ing at a mile and a quarter rigged ns he will be in the Derby with 114 pounds up and a superior rider Johnny Loftns in tie saddle This Texas trainer who saddled Tokalon in the Rrooklyn Handicap of ItOO when that great mare defeated all the stars of the east thinks Hawthorn Is a sure winner of the Kentucky Derby this spring He had the same conlideuce in the ability of the daughter of Tam ¬ many that day and it is a wellknown fact that her owner 7 W Fuller took an enormous sum out of the betting ring that afternoon at the Gravesend track Trevey had told him she could not lose and Fuller wagered a fortune on her chances The Ruschcmeyer trainer is just as confident that Haw ¬ thorn will win the Derby this spring as he was when he told Fuller in 1900 at Gravesendrnd take anything the bookmakers would lay against his mares chances He was not mistaken inTolfalon and he is even more confident that his judgment as to Haw ¬ thorn will be continued on Saturday afternoon May 10 when the Kentucky Derby of llo at Churchill Downs has passed into history historyThe The Churchill Downs and Douglas Park tracks were in improved condition today and prospects of the going being fast tomorrow caused trainers to give most of their horses a sort of opening up for the real let down then thenThe The only Derby candidates worked were Lew Marions Prince Hermis and Sam Illrscb Th former went a half in 52 and liveeighths pulled up in 104 while Sam Hirsch wont the same dis ¬ tance in 104 going the arst half In 52 The best mile of the day was by Melton Street He ran the distance in 146 handily Helen liarbce went live furlongs in 101 pulled up while Maid of Norfolk a twoyearold in the Mackenzie stable went a quarter in 25 25The The only twoyearold work of much consequence during the day was by First Degree Woodman and March In the stable of James S Evennan The trio followed each other a half working in 50 00 and 31 respectively They all could have done better betterJ J F Schorr worked the Kentucky Derby candi ¬ date Leochares a mile at Douglas Park The slowest watch caught the son of Itroomstick in 145 while several of the work watchers made the time 145 The gelding was always In hand and the track he worked over was probably two seconds off Trainer Schorr it is believed intends running Leochares In the Derbv even if the going is fast that day He has declared the gelding as a sure starter If the going is heavy Trainer John Ward has decided not to send Gay Bird to Lexington to nm in the Brewers Selling Stakes The gelding is apparently lit but Ward ha concluded that an early contest at a mile in fast company might affect the son of Oisoaii and unlit him for his other engagements at Churchill Downs Douglas Park and Latonla this spring springTrainer Trainer John Morris was a visitor at the Downs today to see the horses he has in training in James S Eveimans string He reports that four of the live mares he owns have foaled colts this spring all by Knight of the Thistle the sire of Worth winner of the 1912 Kentucky Derby They are Brown colt out of Affect by His Highness chestnut colt out of Toddie dam of Miss Charcot by Lord Esterling bay colt out of Ilandzarra by Handsel brown colt out of Result by Compute The latter youngster Mr Morris thinks is one of the best looking suck ¬ lings he ever owned He has one other mare yet to foal Mary Morris by Victory All his broodmares will again lie mated with Worths sire sireThe The New Louisville Jockey Club is distributing the book program for the meeting at Chnrchll Downs It is embellished witli a front cover pic ¬ ture of Worth the Kentucky Derby winner of last season On the back is Aristides the first Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner The program for the first seven days of overnight races incudes several fea ¬ tures On Monday there is a handicap at one mile and seventv yards for threeyearolds and upward for a purse of 1000 On the following Tuesday there is a purse of 1000 for twoyearold llllies half a mile which is called the Dubutante Purse and takes the place of the stake of that name which was declared off this season On every other afternoon when a stake Is on the card thero is also a 1000 handicap There are numerous In ¬ stances during the first seven days when the values of the purses will go above the 000 ordered by the recent Kentucky State Racing Commission rule rulePresident President C F Grainger of the New Louisville Jockey Club received a telegram today announcing the arrival in New York of M J Winn officials From New York they will go to Pimlico aiid will reach Louisville Saturday night nightJockey Jockey Walter Itrennau has severed his connection with the F J Pons stable and is now looking after Annul and Madeline for Karl Linnell at Churchill Downs during the absence of the latter at Lexing ¬ ton where he took Love Day Osaple and Ymlr to race Brennan will not be able to ride lighter thaa 108 pound this spring springTrainer Trainer James Grillln has received a letter today from T S McCulIoiigh the Illinois turfman bring ¬ ing word that the young broodmare Miss Jiincau by Hurst
