LOUVOIS WINS TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS H P Whitneys Candidate Finishes Third in English Classic Forward a Winner London Eng April 0 At Newmarket today the Two Thousand Guineas for threeyearolds over tint Rowley Mile was won by W Raphaels bay colt Lnnvois by Isinglass St Ixjuvaine with C Bower Ismays bay colt Craganour by Desmond Venera ¬ tion II second and II 1 Whitneys chestnut colt Meeting House by Voter Noonday third Lord Roseberys Sanquhar finished fourth Fifteen horses ran with J Reiff riding the winner while F ONeill was on Meeting House and D Maher on Sanqiihar bettingThe Louvois was at i to 1 in the betting The Heath Ilighwcight Handicap was won by Lord St Davids chestnut colt Forward by Ce sarion Forelock with H I Whitneys chestnut filly Panasine by Peter Pan Ladasine second and H I Kings bay tilly Get ITp by Burgomaster Morning side third all being Americanbred AmericanbredLord Lord Derbys great horse Stedfast won the Chip penham Plate with Auctioneering second and Cyl lene More third thirdYesterday Yesterday the first of Englands five great races for threeyearolds the Two Thousand Guineas wts won by W Raphaels splendid colt Louvois Last year Mr Raphael won the One Thousand Guineas and the Epsom Derby with his gray filly Tagalie and there is a fair chance that lie will now win the Derby of this year Whether he does or not he is truly a fortunate owner What kind of a colt Louvois is was thus set forth by The Special Com ¬ missioner in London Sportsman of April 18 18I I was out on the Bury Side and saw Louvois among other notables He struck me then as having done very well but later on I was privileged to see him in his box and there is really no doubt that he has made more than regulation improvement since last year He stands now exactly sixteen hands and half an inch and he is more like his sire Isin ¬ glass than any other son of that great horse lie has not the back ribs of Isinglass and there alone you can fault him but he has all the depth of girth and hard clean quality without conspicuous hone but that of the best sort As to girth lie has cer ¬ tainly sprung in his true ribs since last season as he now girths two holes more than he did then He handles hard and muscular and his neck and poll clearly mark his constitution and strength More ¬ over he does himself well in the stable and always feeds up which is the only doubt one might enter ¬ tain atxmt a colt with a hardly sutlicient bread liasket Perfect in his temper like his sire he is as we know somewhat more enterprising on a race course and has never yet required the liberal appli ¬ cation of the stick which was always necessary In the case of Isinglass Of one thing I am certain and that is that Louvois is a betterclass colt tbuli his brother Lonviers We are however in what seems to be a betterclass year than when Louvlers only just failed to win the Derby and a better than Louviers might not be nearly good enough this time I am inclined to believe however that in Louvois Isinglass has left us his true monument That the colt is not quite truly molded along his loins is I think plain to see that is to say he is a trifle short from croup to dock which leaves the loins a trifle long and this coupled with shortness of back ribs prevents Louvois from being an exact replica of Isinglass but he has wide lengthy muscular quarters of the very best and it happens not infre ¬ quently that his conformation behind the saddle tends to the very perfection of hind action Any ¬ how it is quite certain that the colt has thriven ou his work and his legs look like carrying him as long as his owner chooses to keep him in training Lord Annandalc which was iKiught to lead Louvois proves to be in no condition as yet for that task but somehow the big colt has got forward enough and he will be fit to do himself justice In the Two Thousand Guineas though he may not be at his very best on that day
