DERBY ASPECT MORE OPEN CONVICTION GROWING THAT YANKEE NO ¬ TIONS MUST BE RECKONED WITH Foundation Figures in Another Sensational WorkOut at Churchill Downs and Gains New Sup ¬ porters Louisville Gossip Louisville Ky May 7 Yankee Notions dead heat with Rudolfo at Lexington has given the Ken ¬ tucky Derby to be decided at Churchill Downs on Saturday next a more open aspect than It hitherto had The withdrawal of Helios Hawthorn Frede ¬ rick L and His Majesty from the list of possi ¬ bilities left the average racegoer inclined to the Idea that the race would finally narrow down to a duel between A L Astes Ten Point present favor ¬ ite and leading representative of the east and C W McKennas Foundation the hope of the Ken tuckians now that Hawthorn and Helios are defi ¬ nitely out of the running As a result oft Yankee Notions performance of Monday the conviction is growing that he is likely to be a formidable factor in Saturdays classic It is pointed out that in deadheating with Rudolfo he ran a mile and 70 yards in 142 which is twolifthu of a second faster than Ten Point ran the same distance in his last race at Havre de Grace It is true that Yankee Notions only carried 105 pounds but he was meet ¬ ing a fouryearold in Rudolfo which had eight pounds off his regular weight He was giving the touryearold seven pounds by the scale The race was run within twofifths of a second of track record time at Lexington and the first mile was covered in While the Knapp colt will pick ¬ up twelve pounds more in the Derby he showed as a twoyearold that he could carry weight well Yankee Notions is a son of the Futurity winner Yankee which was by Hanover out of Correction a great race mare and a sister to the mighty Domino Yankee Notions dam was Fairie Queen the dam of the highclass filly Sprite Xairy Queen was by the noted Missouri sire Faustus and is a sister to the great Cesarion On both sides Yankee Notions comes from a line that has produced in lit years many horses of great speed and back In the old days many stayers Neither Ten Point nor Ipundation excel Yankee Notions in appearance and his race of Monday should do him much good Iji the preparationC way of Derby preparation C W McKeunas Lexington favorite for the Ken ¬ tucky Derby Foundation worked a sensational trial over the full Derby course at Churchill Downs this morning With jockey Taplin in the saddle and his Derby weight up the son of Nasturtium went a mile and a quarter pulled to a canter In the final furlong in 207 Had Taplin sent him along in the last quarter at anything like his limit he would have worked the distance in 205 the record time for the Derby scored by Meridian when he won the race from Governor Gray in 1Jll Owing to lack of rain during the last ten days the track at Churchill Downs Is topped witli a sprinkling of fine dust whjch makes it a bit dead As a consequence Foundations trial must be regarded as the most impressive preliminary work ever done on this track for the Derby The fractional time was 12 24 H5 47 101 11 120 139 l3fc He mileHis was slowed down after he had gone the mile His sensational work has caused a wonderful re ¬ action in Foundations favor and it is questionable now if Ten Point will rule favorite over him Foundation cooled out finely after the trial and left the track as if he had done only an ordinary workout lie is apparently as fit to run a race like himDoerhoefer the Kentucky Derby as hands can make him Doerhoefer Wests Kentucky Derby candidate Jimmie Gill had his final tryout for the event today and while he did fairly well for a maiden lie will have to improve amazingly on this work to have even a chance to show with such colts as Ten 1oint Foundation and Yankee Notions Jimmie Gill went a mile and a quarter over the Derby route in 209 The fractional 23 37 49 102 11G 12S 142 155 In the early part of the workout the son of Fatherless was rank and his jockey found it hard to hold him to a rating pace Ten paceTen 1883 Mr Morris won the American Derby with Strathmeath in 1891 That gelding was not engaged iu the Kentucky Derby but in the Chicago race he defeated King inan which won the Churchill Downs event that season Mr Morris has little to say about the Derby this season as he knows nothing about Ten Point and will not commit himself as a consequence in bis opinion as to how Foundation will perform when lie meets a colt with the reputation of the Aste crack crackJohn John W Schorr tlie Memphis turfman who is now here watching his horses work at Douglas Park made a Hying trip iu Lexington Monday in his automobile He left Douglas Park at 10 oclock and readied Lexington in time to eat lunch at Idle Hour Farm with E R Bradley and get to the track in time to see the first race He stayed lit the Kentucky Association course until the lifth race had been run and then arrived in Louisville in time to eat his dinner at his hotel here Mr Schorr is much pleased with the way bis horses are training at Douglas Park especially his Kentucky Derby candidate Leochares and his great fouryear old Froglegs ruling favorite for the Kentucky Handicap He thinks be has some good twoyear olds in his barn this season but is of the opinion that the best of the lot will need time to develop Into their best racing form The youngsters he likes liest are Luke McLuke a sou of Ultimus and Vaudergrift by the
