RECENT RACING IN AUSTRALIA The Australian Jockey Club Autumn Meeting was held during Easter week at Randwick Sydney This meeting Is the most important in New South Wales and only second in importance through the Common ¬ wealth to the Melbourne Cup meeting The club has made great strides during the last few years and at this meeting the stakes amounted to 152010 125 750 being added by the club This is the greatest amount of prize money ever competed for at a meet ¬ ing in Australia The principal events are the Australian Jockey Clubs St Leger and Autumn Stakes of 5000 the Sydney Cup 25000 added I tho Doncaster Handicap Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes and the AllAged Stakes 10 000 added the Cumberland Stakes and Australian Jockey Clubs Plate of 7500 each eachThe The Leger was won by Mr E Clarkes bay colt Wolowa which has by winning tho Victoria Racing Club Derby and Victoria Racing Club St Leger established his claim to the title of tho best three yearold of the season The Champagne Stakes for twoyearolds was won by Mr Watts Atheiiic by Traquair out of Arajoel carrying seven pounds pen ¬ alty and the Sires Produce Stakes also for two yearolds went to Radnor a colt by Earlston from Burletta The Doucaster Handicap and AllAged Stakes were won by Mr P A Connollys Jolly Beggar a fiveyearold by Ayr Laddie from Lady Trenville defeating in the latter race tho favorite Eudnrus which Is well known on tho English race courses He still belongs to Messrs Clark and Rob Infoii and is trained by J E Brewer BrewerThe The Autumn Stakes and Cumberland Stakes were Won by Mr W Browns fouryearold bay colt Piastre the winner of last years Melbourne Cup which by his performances this year has stamped himself as the best horse in tho Commonwealth The Australian Jockey Clubs Plate of three miles went to Mr Whites bay colt Harpist three years by Sir Tristram out of Choir Girl GirlThe The Sydney Cup two miles was annexed by the fiveyearold bay horse Cadonia by Prudent King out of Enooma carrying 137 pounds and starting at 25 to 1 Cagon by Ayr Laddie was second and Jacamar by Positano third The time for the race was 32S 32SThe The most successful jockey at tho meeting was J Lambert who rode four winners A Wood and M Council coming next with three successes each W McLachlan who has ridden iu England piloted Harp 1st and Athenic to victory victoryMr Mr OBriens bay colt Beragoon the crack tw yearold of the spring performed badly at the meet ¬ ing beiug defeated in both the big twoyearold events and the sou of Multiform does not look like fulfilling tho promise of his early career It was stated in the spring that the owner had refused 52000 for tho colt The most successful sires at the meeting were Ayr Laddie and Posltano witli two races each but the meeting was remarkable for tin success of imported sires Out of the twenty fiat races sixteen wen1 won by horses sired by English horses The following in addition to Positana am Ayr Laddie were represented by winners Earlstun Veles Traquair Prudent King Fortiinatus San Francisco Flavns Grafton Martagon Sir Tristram Soult and Petrillo
