UPSETS AT DOUGLAS PARK SURPRISING RESULTS ATTEND DECISION OF SEVERAL RACES AT LOUISVILLE TRACK Irish Gentleman Makes New Track Record for Milo and Seventy Yards in Winning1 Handicap Floral Park Races Disappointingly Louisville Ky May 27 A surprisingly largo crowd visited Douglas Park today although by comparison with yesterdays immense turnout it was small Improved weather made the racing enjoyable jut upsets that came in most the races gave tho orni students a jolt Tho worst setback that the talent experienced attended the failure of Floral ark in the third race when Semprite and McCorklc cd her to the linish Itecanse of her good showing in the Kentucky Oaks run at Churchill Downs last Saturday she was considered as the most promising ctting prospect of tho afternoon and accordingly was supported with such confidence that she went o the iK st at an extremely short price She ran romisingly for the tirst threequarters by malntain ng close pursuit of Semprite the leader but when jockey Peak called on her to go to the front she failed ttterly and was later displaced for second money y McCorklo The latter came with a swift rush In the liual furlong and just failed to get up for tho purse purseJ J W Schorrs Edda was another to which the speculators gave favorable consideration She was In tho mile and seventy yards handicap and at the weight assignment appeared to stand out Tho Irish Gentlemans connections however had deep designs on the purse and they made no mistakes for he won like a good one in time that lowered this track record of 14 by a full second Irish Gentlemans race of today was in strking contrast to his three essays at Churchill Downs He was rid X den this afternoon by Btixton and the change to this rider from Deavenport who rode him in previous races may have had something to do with his im ¬ proved showing showingClose Close finishes featured most of todays contests some of them being of a variety that caused some exceptions to be taken on account of the placing There is a difficult angle at tins course and when a close linish comes those in a iKisUion to the left of the judges stand are prone to think that the one finishing closest to the outer rail is in advance of the inside horse whereas sometimes the runner next the inside rail is almost a good neck in front frontThe The colors of A 15 Spreckeis were in front for the lirst time on a Kentucky course when Birka i won the second race for which Watermelon ruled favorite The latter suffered bad racing luck soon after the start when Honey Mine crossed her legs and unseated jockey Goose Another to suffer by the mishap was Buzz Around on which Ganz hail the mount The latter pulled his mount up to avoid striking his brother while passing passingBack Back Bay started the talent off well by winning the opening dash commandingly Chartier at a long price taking second money The latter was so lightly regarded that lie was grouped with others in the field Birka winner of the second race was also in the field Thomas C McDowells Bandit graduated from the maiden class in the fifth race when he managed to last just long enough to score bv a short head in advance of the fast finishing Bird Man The closing dasli was a stnhliornly fought battle between Floral Day Spindle and Cracker Box the trio finishing in the order named namedNotwithstanding Notwithstanding heavy rain last night the track was in excellent condition and fast time was recorded in all the races Good judges consider this track to IKJ the fastest in the country and evidently moisture will not effect it for any length of time timeJockev Jockev Goose as a result of his fall on Honey Mine sustained a slight dislocation of the shoulder and was forced to cancel his remaining engagements The threehorse combination consisting of Irish Gentleman Bandit and Floral Day paid its backers 17225 for a 2 investment The twohorse com ¬ bination consisting of Semprite and Birka was not picked and the
