JOHN RODEGAP DIES AT LOUISVILLE Louisville Ky May 27 John IJodegap one of the oldest and best known horsemen in the country died at Sis Mary and Elizabeth hospital at 10 oclock last Vcning of organic heart trouble Mr Kodegap wl o was 72 years old was best known as be train r of Spokane which defeated Proctor Knott in th Kentucky Derby the Latonia Derby and the gre t American Derby at Chicago in 1889 Mr Kodegap who was owner of Dr Uolzberg ami had interests in several other horses came to Louis ¬ ville at the opening of the Churchill Downs meeting While he had been in poor health for some time he did not become acutely ill until two days ago He was born near Freeport III and became identi ¬ fied witli the trotters at an early age About thirty years ago he became interested in the running horse and since then had devoted his time and atten ¬ tion exclusively to them For the last two years he had made his home at Lexington lie is Sur ¬ vived by a widow and one daughter UIKIII receiv ¬ ing the news of Mr Hodegaps death this morning Milton Young chairman of the Kentucky State liacing Commission telegraphed Charles F Grainger presi ¬ dent of the New Louisville Jockey Club asking him to take charge of the body and look after the funeral arrangements Mr Young added that he had telegraphed Mr Bodegaps sister in the east for instructions and would communicate with Mr Grainger as soon as lie was advised advisedIn In addition to training Sixikane the deceased at one time had charge of the extensive string of racers owned by Edward Corrigan He also trained Buck Massie when that great racer was at his best bestLexington Lexington Ky May 27 News of the death of the veteran trainer John Bodegap in Louisville last evening was received here witli many expressions of regret Next to Green B Morris lie was prob ¬ ably the oldest of the active trainers on the Ameri ¬ can turf His most notable achievement as a trainer was probably witli Spokane winner of the Kentucky Derby and the American Derby of 1S8I He was once trainer of a big string of good horses owned bv Ed Corrigan and later lie was the racing partner of IK C Kodcnhaugh but after Newt Lane shot and killed Kodciihaiigh in a Versailles hotel lie opened a public stable which he conducted for nineteen years with varying success The end found him In Mssession of little property of value His only daughter is a resident of New York
