THE STYLE OF HORSE TRACERY IS Harking back to the Burkwell Stakes the result may bu said to have revealed Tracery in the light of a prospective Cup champion of the first class and bis threeyearold promise which culmniated in a runaway victory in the Doncaster St Leger has been handsomely realised Except that he was foaled in the land of Stars and Stripes there is really nothing American about him as he is by Hock Sand out of Topiary a mare of remarkable pedigree witli French blood in her veins by Orme out of Plaisanterie famous like Ilosebery and Fox hall as winner of the great Cesarewitch and Cam ¬ bridgeshire double event by Wellingtonia Now twelve years old Topiary had her first produce in 1OG a colt by Bushey Park which belonged to Lord Hamilton of Dalzell after which she was cov ¬ ered by Melton and with her foal was sent to Mr Belmonts stud in U S A there to give birth to the new champion who Is an enlarged sample and even better looking than his sire who earned lasting fame as a triple crowned hero of the Two Thousand Guineas Derby and St Leger though he had bad luck in several bouts against Sceptre and Ard Pat ¬ rick each of which in turn treated him with scant courtesy in the 10000 pounders We have had suf ¬ ficient evidence to justify the opinion that Tracery resembles his sire in he is a line natural stayer with bulldog plnck and as long as he keeps well I do not think any fear need be apprehended from a French Invasion at Ascot Nor do I anticipate that he will be beaten by anything not excepting even Prince Palatine produceable from our home re ¬ sources In view of his later and more Important engagements it may be assumed that although he had done plenty of good work he ivas not wound up to concert pitch on Tuesday and though there are some who think that as the winningpost was reached Jackdaw was going if anything the stronger of the two I do not for a moment imagine that Mr Piries horse will ever get as near him again while there is no valid reason for supposing that Stedfast will be able to reverse their relative placlngs placlngsThe The two can have another go at Epsom both be ¬ ing engaged in the Coronation Cup which promises a most interesting contest among others nominated being Prince Palatine Shannon Sweeper II Lo ¬ mond Long Set Maiden Krlegh Adam Bcde Sir Martin and Lorenzo but as regards the lastnamed who acquitted himself in fine performance in the Manchester Cup last Friday thereby vindicating ti high opinion that has always been indulged by his trainer John Watson it seems not improbable tint Mr Leopold de Rothschild will prefer to hold him in reserve for his Ascot liabilities which embrace the Fiftyninth Triennial Stakes the Gold Cup and the Hardwicke Stakes As far as I can see Tracerys only engagement at the Royal Meeting is in the Cup but looking further ahead his name will be found in the entry for the Sandown Park Eclipse Stakes tho Jockey Club Stakes the Cham ¬ pion Stakes and the limekiln Stakes the three events last named all at Ncwinaret Like many a good horse before him Tracery is u high blower which is not uncommon with stay ¬ ers and furthermore has a habit of racing with his tongue out but unless I am far wide of the mark there is a great future before him both as a racehorse and later as a sire and he will prove a worthy successor to his father Rock Sand who not so long since was purchased privately by a French syndicate and left America where his stud services were highly successful As to his early career it mar not IK generally known that Tracery was a highly I nse the word advisedly tried year ¬ ling then something wont wrong with his hock and with thoroughpin supervening bo could not lie prepared for any of his twoyearold engagements in fact his first appearance in public was in tho Dcrbv last year when he finished third to Tagalie and Jaeger Vigilant in London Sportsman
