A L ASTES B C TEN POINT 3 by JACK POINT GOLD TEN ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT OF THE LATONIA DERBY CANDIDATES The advent of Tony Astes fleet colt Ton Point in western racing was an occurrence that added greatly to the interest of the remarkably successful Louisville meetings It is true the colt failed to win the principal events that enticed his owner to send him west the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Handi ¬ cap but in each and in all of his other western races he never ran worse than second and in all proved himself such an exceptionally good race horse in all respects that it is only in respect to money won that his western trip can justly be called a failure It remains for the nearby Latouia Derby to give him a chance to retrieve himself in this one particular in which he is deficient so far From the style of his racing at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park it can be safely said that if he is beaten in tlfc Iatonia Derby the horse that vanquishes him will be aware of the fact that it had been engaged in a real horse race raceAs As a twoyearold Ten Point was not started until late in the racing campaign of 1012 His first essay was in a purse at live and a half furlongs at Laurel October 1 in which at the liberal price of lKt to 1 ho ran fourth to Hobnob Kcderal and Palanquin October 4 he came out in another purse race at the same distance and won by a length and a half in 107 from Ambrose and Afterglow with eight more youngsters unplaced Evidently something in his running in his first race had made an impression ftr here he was a 2 to 1 favorite lie did not run again until October 22 when Tartar gave him four pounds and a length and a half beating at the same distance over a slow track in 100 and carried 112 pounds to his 108 After that he was beaten no more highclass performance over the slow Pimlico track trackThis This year he made Ills first appearance in racing in the Belair Handicap at Havre dc Grace It was at threequarters of a mile for threeyearolds and over and carrying 108 pounds he won by three lengths from Buskin 10 in 113 Frederick L at 111 pounds was the favorite and finished third with Caugh Hill 124 Grover Hughes 117 and Kleburne 100 and Everett 110 More to the purpose he ran the distance in 111 and won by two lengths practically unextended May unextendedMay 1 he was tirst in the Susquehaiiiia Handicap at a mile and seventy yards Here he was given a severe test and met its requirements nobly Carrying the steadying weight for so early in the year as 117 IKiimds to 102 on Buskin 124 on John Furlong 105 on Lochie I2 on Adams Express 102 on Flabbergast and 107 on Mission he made the running from start to finish and won from Buskin by a half lenth with John Furlong a bad third He ran the first mile in 138 and the entire distance in 145 and with the laurels of this splendid race still fresh came west to meet the stars of the western turf in gallant striving fur further fame fameHis His first start in the west was in the Kentucky Derby May 10 for which he was the favorite at to 5 His Rice was all that could be expected of a good horse but in the fastest Kentucky Derby ever run at its present distance he fell a victim to the meteoric stretch rush of the outsider Donerail and beaten an unlucky half length in 204 May 22 he was started in a purse race at a mile anil seventy wis yards over a heavy track and was beaten a head by the fast but uncertain fiveyearold marc Swannanoa canying 115 pounds to her 10 May 25 at Douglas Park in the rich Kentucky Handicap at a mile and I quarter he took up 110
