MONTREAL MEETING OYER FLABBERGAST WINS JACQUES CARTIER STAKES AND THEN CHANGES HANDS Is Bid Up from 2500 to 3500 and His Owner OwnerLets Lets Him Go Followers of Racing in i Canada Off for Ottawa Montreal Que June 10 For the closing day of the Montreal Jockey Clubs spring meeting a large crowd journeyed to Blue Bonnets this afternoon A splendid program of seven races was provided with the Jacques Cartier Selling Stakes as the feature This has been a fixture since racing was inaugurated at Blue Bonnets and it has invariably been marked by interesting contests Todays running was no exception to the rule for it was only after a stirring drive that Flabbergast suc ¬ ceeded in beating Blackford a head Blackford which ran coupled with Cliff Edge as the K E Watkins entry would have scored in another stride He was closing fast and just failed to get up Honey Bee flattered her backers by racing into a commanding lead hi the early part of the race but after they had gone seven furlongs she began to quit There was a bit of excitement after the race when the winner Flabbergast was offered at auction He was entered to be sold for 2500 and W M Martin trainer for Amos Turney bid him up to 3500 at which figure he secured the colt Flabbergast has shown much improved forni this spring as compared with last year and is a steady going sort of a colt that can win in any kind of going J W Biirttschell claimed Cliff Edge but almost immediately rescld the horse to It E Wat kius kiusThe The tabled history of the Jacques Cartier Slakes is as follows Tear Winner AWt Jockey Val Time 1007 Niblick S3 J Murphy 075 140 1008 Goes Fast 3 84 Francis 075 130 1000 Centre Shot 4 1011 Mentry 1G75 142 1010 Banivcs 3 103 G Burns 1530 1530147 147 1011 Spellbound 5 103 Gross 1505 130 M 1012 Blackford 103 C Turner 1400 141 V 1013 Flabbergast 3 110 J Wilson 1445 140 Tho halter men were again active after Towtou TowtouFields Fields victory He was bid up from 1000 to 1GUO by Sam Louis and was retained by his owner Two claims were then put In one for Astrologer by J W Biirttschell who secured the Tyrce colt for 1435 II G Bedwell put in a claim for Koyal Message but wrote out the amount involved as 1410 The stewards decided tho claim was not valid and it was thrown out outStirring Stirring finishes were seen in all but the steeple ¬ chase three of the winners beating the second horse by the smallest of margins Supreme marginsSupreme a brother to Hobnob starting for tin first time In the opening race found support from his stable but was beaten through a poor ride Tho colt tried to run out and Wilson had his head pulled sideways in rounding the far turn Had he taken him on the inside Supreme could not have lost As it was he finished third coming from behiud and finishing stoutly Hugh stoutlyHugh Penny has arranged to take Lahore to New York in the car in which he ships the string of T F Sheedy to Belmont Park ParkW W C Clancy will ship his stable from hero to Fort Erie and W M Martin will go to Hamilton with the division of Amos Turneys string that has been racing at Blue Bonnets BonnetsA A majority of the followers of racing who have been here during the meeting will leave for Ottawa tomorrow All of the big stables will also go to Connaught Park on the two big special horse trains that are scheduled to pull out in the morning
