FITTING FINALE FOR KENTUCKY SEASON Independence Handicap on Friday and Cincinnati Trophy on Saturday Promise Brilliant Sport Cincinnati Juno 28 One week from today the rich Cincinnati Trophy Stakes will be decided for the twelfth time at the Latonia race course featur ¬ ing as usual the closing day of the present sum ¬ mer meeting and marking the end of the spring and summer racing season of 1913 in Kentucky This year the race will have a gross value of fully 0000 and will bo worth more to the winner than any stake for twoyearolds this season on the American turf with the exceptions of the Piping Rock Breeders futurity at Lexington and the Futurity at Saratoga SaratogaAside Aside from the money value of the race the winner will receive the Cincinnati Trophy a beau ¬ tiful silver loving cup The Trophy this season is a remarkably tine example of the silversmiths art from an artistic as well as a technical stand ¬ point and show beautiful modelling as well as rich and rare chasing chasingThose Those features of the design which symbolize tlie purpose for which the cup was intended are all cast in basrelief and are unusually heavy The front panel of the cup shows a beautifully executed horses head surrounded by a horseshoo both of which are cast in solid gold stand out In striking contrast to the background of gray sliver of which tlio rest of the cup is composed Beneath tho horses head and horseshoe appears the In ¬ scription in large letters Cincinnati Trophy for Twoyearolds The three handles represent corn ¬ stalks and between eacli handle Is room for an In scriplion appropriate to the fortunate winner of the beautiful trophy The base has a heavy cast of oats oatsThe The first Cincinnati Trophy was presented to tliis race in 1002 by Hon Julius Flcischmann son of Chas Flcischmann the greatest turfman Cincinnati lias ever known That cup was won by George J Ixmg of Louisville now one of the mem ¬ bers of the Kentucky State Racing Commission He won the event that season which was the first year the great race was run on with the tilly Watoma which lias since become famous as a broodmare she having produced the great RII dolfo winner of the win ¬ ner of 1000 second and Maplrhurst third In 1000 Planute owned by E Corrigan now retired from tho turf won the event with Zal and Yowric two horses owned by William Gerst the Nash ¬ ville turfman second and third Mr Gerst now has both these performers in the stud at his farm in Tennessee Tennesseen n 1907 the first filly winner of the race turned up in Chulita owned by the Cincinnati turfman Alex Lalwid while R C Rann ran third In 190S Direct was the winner with Crystal Maid later a Latonia Oaks winner second and Dick Roller third The Latonia Derby winner of 1911 Governor Gray won tlu race in 1910 with Lnbold second and Golden Egg third while In 1911 that speedy filly Lady Lightning was tho victor beating in this event such stars as Presumption Ainoii The Manager and Worth Helios
