HORSEMEN GO ON STRIKE Refuse to Race at Mineral Springs Until Previous Days Purses Are Paid The attendance at the Mineral Springs track yes ¬ terday was of the here and there variety a diagram whereof Is that at the height of the afternoons proceedings a person or two might be observed here and there in the grandstand and a person or more here and there underneath the grandstand Those present were entertained with various unexpected features not on the formal program The adage of old that It is money that makes the mare go was illustrated by the fact that owners not having been paid the winnings of their horses on Monday and also a part of those of last Saturday had gone on a strike and refused to start their horses unless arrears were settled and satisfactory assurances for the future given The upshot was that after a con ¬ ference all hands came trooping down from the office and the racing went on It was said that 1000 in cash was produced of which half went to Saturdays winners and half to Mondays The understanding was that more cash would be dis ¬ tributed today in the forenoon Where it is to come from was not given publicity It could not come from the gate because there was no gate worth making a fuss about aboutBetween Between the second and third races another of tho peculiar features of the day cropped up This was in the way of a gale of wind from the east The finely triturated and abundant dust from the track and field blew through the stands in such blinding profusion that there was no getting away from it and no man could tell where Ills neighbor was except by bumping into him It was really alarming but fortunately rain fell presently and cleared the air but not until suits and costumes were lavishly laden with good Hoosier soil to the point of ruin Then while the last race was being pulled off it began to rain heavily and in making their way to the return train many wellintentioned people were drenched to the hide and nature wept copiously from the track to the La Salle Street Station StationThe The delay in settling with owners put the post time of the first race back to 310 p in instead the scheduled 230 The races were then pulled off with reasonable promptness and were worth viewing Capitan Bravo won the principal race of the day at a mile and a sixteenth and was cheered energetically by some people who had assisted in backing him down from S to 5 to 4 to 5 Beautiful lost any chance she may have had by dwelling at the start The twoyearolds Harwood Tik Tok and Ivan Gardner furnished a capital finish Favorites ac ¬ counted for nearly all of the races racesA A petition was l eing circulated among the owners pledging them to stay over and race for six 125 purses per day money to be paid promptly It will take the developments of today to determine the success of this particular effort
